REPORTS TO:

Director of Infusion Services

JOB SUMMARY:

The Infusion Administration Nurse provides professional, coordinated care in the delivery of oncology treatments to patients in a clinic setting. This role also includes responsibilities for the safe and sterile preparation of chemotherapy and biotherapy agents in compliance with USP and USP standards. The nurse collaborates with providers and interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe medication preparation and administration, patient-centered care, and adherence to national safety and quality standards.

SCOPE

OF ROLE:

The infusion administration nurse is responsible for:

Administration of IV chemotherapy, biotherapy, supportive treatments, and injections.

May be trained, educated, and required to prepare sterile hazardous and non-hazardous admixtures for infusion, based on operational needs.

Maintaining central venous access devices and performing patient assessments.

Ensuring compliance with clinical standards and regulatory guidelines (e.g., ONS, QOPI, ASCO, NIOSH, USP /).

Guiding patients through the complexities of cancer treatment while demonstrating empathy, safety, and excellence.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Infusion Administration Responsibilities

Provide direct patient care in preparation for anticancer therapies.

Safely administer chemotherapy and biotherapy in accordance with orders.

Perform patient assessments before, during, and after treatment.

Maintain and flush central venous access devices (e.g., ports, PICCs).

Monitor patients for adverse reactions and intervene as needed.

Proper assessment and management of extravasation and infiltration.

Provide education to patients and families on treatment expectations, symptom evaluation, and self-care.

Collaborate with physicians and team members to adjust care plans as needed.

Document treatments, assessments, and communications accurately in the EMR.

Support compliance with clinic standards, including ONS guidelines, ASCO-COA Oncology Medical Home Standards, and QOPI quality measures.

Admixture Responsibilities

Prepare sterile parenteral admixtures (hazardous and non-hazardous) under USP / regulations.

Sterile admixture of chemotherapy in an ISO Class 5 compliant BSC or CACI using aseptic techniques.

Accurately calculate and verify drug dosages.

Track medication inventory and monitor expiration dates.

Handle and store hazardous medications according to safety protocols.

Maintain a clean, organized, and compliant admixture workspace.

Hazardous spill management

Initial and annual fit test and training for N-95 and/or PAPR use

Collaborate with the clinical team to verify and interpret admixture orders.

Reviews new regimen orders and compares them to NCCN guidelines and/or other source documentation provided by the ordering physician; ensures that dosages, schedules and drugs match the indication, and that adequate supportive measures are in place before the final orders are saved by the physician.

Participate in training and continuous education in chemotherapy agents, safety procedures, and EHR proficiency.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Strong knowledge of chemotherapy and biotherapy administration and protocols.

Expertise in sterile admixture techniques and hazardous drug handling.

Understanding central line management, oncology nursing assessments, and patient safety practices.

Proficient in EMR documentation and medication ordering systems.

Strong critical thinking, time management, and problem-solving abilities.

Ability to educate patients using adaptive techniques and teach-back methods.

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team.

EDUCATION / LICENSURE / CERTIFICATIONS

Graduate from an accredited nursing school.

Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Nebraska (required).

Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification (required).

Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) chemotherapy/biotherapy certification or willingness to obtain.

Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) certification encouraged when eligible.
