Community Action Partnerships of Western Nebraska (CAPWN) is a non-profit community-based health and human services organization that serves low-income, disadvantaged and those unable to meet their needs through other sources. The agency was established in 1965 and provides services to over 9,000 individuals, children and families in three main areas:

  • Community Health Services
    : WIC, Commodity Supplemental Food, Foster Grandparents, Head Start, and Child Development Center.
  • Clinical Health Services
    :
    Primary Care, Reproductive Health, Diabetes Management, Immunizations, Migrant Health, Ryan White HIV;
    Behavioral Health including Counseling Services, Medication Management, Medication Assisted Treatment and Substance Use Counseling and Intensive Outpatient Services and Dental Services.

Job Title

Head Start/CAPWN CDC Cook

Reports to

Head Start Nutrition Manager

Areas of Responsibility

Purchase and prepare meals for children and staff in accordance with Administration for Children and Families (ACF) Head Start Performance Standards and Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP). Maintain kitchen following the proper health and sanitation guidelines.

Major Duties
  • Prepare and serve attractive and tasteful foods adapted to the varied physical development of the children in the center that meets requirements for creditable meals.
  • Shop locally and order through distributors, purchasing foods in an economical manner.
  • Keep an organized and hygienic kitchen and surrounding area in order to uphold required health and safety standards.
  • Maintain food service equipment in working condition, report damaged and loss of kitchen equipment and food to Nutrition Coordinator.
  • Maintain completed and accurate required paperwork.
  • Join the children and staff for noon meals to model appropriate eating behaviors.
  • Be a resource to teachers for ways children can be involved in food preparation and experiences, plan menus.
  • Involve parents in better understanding of nutrition and increase abilities in food preparation and serving, along with providing consumer information.
  • Supervises volunteers working in the kitchen.
  • Communicate in a positive and proficient manner.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding program, children, families and staff.
  • Participate and cooperate to support a quality program through participation in team meetings, training and program assessment.
  • Model positive regard for program in the community.
