Position: Full Description
This is responsible, semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of the City Solid Waste Transfer Station. An incumbent operates the transfer station to collect and compact refuse from commercial haulers and the public for transfer. The employee also may be responsible for managing the work of court-ordered community service workers. The work is performed under the direction of the Transfer Station Supervisor, with the employee exercising considerable independent judgment in operating the transfer station.

Must maintain a State of Nebraska Commercial Driver's License Class A within 3 months of hire;

Key Responsibilities

* Operates front-end loader in a safe and non-damaging manner, to clear trash from tipping area, cleans up yard waste disposal area, and moves concrete, dirt, and wood into piles; assists in the maintenance of front-end loaders as required.

* Inspects loads for toxic waste and other substances prohibited in the landfill; operates computerized truck scale to weigh materials carried by haulers and the public; explains policies on allowable refuse to the public and other related haulers.

* Drives semi-tractor to change out trailers as they become full or reach allowable maximum weight; parks trailers on staging area to be picked up for transport to landfill; inspects trailers for condition of tires and damage and transports trailers to landfill.

* Maintains surrounding grounds; empties dumpster in yard waste disposal area; picks up trash from facility grounds and surrounding roads and fields; operates mowers and weed trimmers; removes snow with loader or with snow shovel.

* Performs maintenance and repair work on equipment; lubricates and checks oil levels on rams and hydraulic power unit; replaces or repairs hoses, connections, motors and other equipment as needed.

Qualifications

* Must maintain a Commercial driver's license within first 3 months of hire

* Must become certified in waste management by the Solid Waste Association of North America.

* Experience in the operation of heavy equipment
