The Dockmaster is responsible for coordinating the safe and efficient berthing of passenger vessels and managing the day-to-day operations of ferry terminals. This includes monitoring harbor activity, directing vessel traffic, maintaining orderly passenger flow, and ensuring adherence to Authority regulations. The role also provides real-time communication with vessels via VHF radio, oversees the opening and closing of terminals, and supports marine operations safety.
Responsibilities- Prepares berthing space for ships, vessels, and ferries in accordance with berth application
- Assists with ensuring the safety and security of passengers and/or cargo on the doc
- Ensures that the dock is kept clean
- Reports all incidents that occur on the dock or within the harbor to Marine Supervisor.
- Maintains a log of day-to-day activity including navigational aids and beacons.
- Maintains a daily log of all vessels, inclusive of Ports vessel, that arrive and depart from the Port facility.
- Conducts daily inspection and basic maintenance (cleaning, replacement of oil and fuel, etc.) of the Port vessel.
- Creates daily and monthly written reports of all activities to Marine Supervisor or designate.
- Reports all major maintenance needs and requirements of Port vessel to Marine Technician or Senior Dockmaster.
- Assists and liaises with the Security and Operations Departments regarding movement of passengers and cargo traffic over and on the dock area.
- Assists with maintenance (inclusive of repairing bollards) of the docks.
- Controls the flow of traffic on the dock.
- Monitors the VHF traffic.
- Monitors vessel traffic in the harbors.
- Monitors all VHF Radio or DDM weather reports.
- Reports all hazards to the Marine Supervisor or Senior Dockmaster.
- Reports all emergencies, bomb threats, fire, inquiries, etc. to the Marine Supervisor;
- Carry out all duties and tasks in an efficient and productive manner.
- Proper use of IT provided tools/equipment
- High School Diploma preferred
- Basic Maritime Certificate (e.g., VHF Radio Communication, crowd control, vessel operations)
- VHF radio communication training required
- Familiarity with BVI Port Authority regulations preferred
- 1-2 years’ experience in marine terminal operations or vessel coordination beneficial
- Proficiency in data entry and basic computer skills
- Maritime Communication:
Proficient in VHF radio procedures and harbour control. - Operational Awareness:
Understanding of vessel operations, passenger safety, and harbour management. - Regulatory Knowledge:
Familiarity with laws and policies governing terminal and ferry operations. - Attention to Detail:
Accurate record-keeping and reporting of daily terminal activity. - Customer & Agency Interaction:
Ability to coordinate with internal teams and external agencies such as Customs and Immigration.
