The Senior Accountant will serve as a key member within a roadway construction organization focused primarily on Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) prime contracts. This role is responsible for maintaining accurate financial records, supporting job cost visibility, and providing operational leaders with clear, actionable financial insight.
The ideal candidate has deep accounting expertise that is second nature, strong experience in construction accounting and job costing, and the ability to translate financial data into practical guidance for operations teams. This individual will oversee day-to-day accounting activities, lead a small accounting team, and partner closely with project managers and operations leadership to ensure financial performance aligns with project expectations.
Key Responsibilities- Own the monthly, quarterly, and year-end close process ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and strong internal controls.
- Maintain and review general ledger activity, including accruals, prepaids, revenue recognition, and cost allocations.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and construction accounting best practices.
- Prepare and review financial statements and management reports.
- Maintain integrity of job cost reporting across ODOT prime contracts.
- Monitor cost-to-complete, project margins, and job performance in coordination with operations.
- Support revenue recognition using percentage-of-completion or cost-to-cost methods.
- Assist with project setup, cost coding, and job performance reviews.
- Serve as the local accounting liaison to project managers and operations leadership.
- Translate financial results into clear operational insights to help teams manage job profitability.
- Participate in job review meetings, providing guidance on cost trends, margin risks, and financial performance.
- Work with leadership to enhance data quality between estimating, project management, and accounting systems.
- Mentor Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and General Ledger staff.
- Ensure high standards for invoice processing, collections, and account reconciliations.
- Establish efficient processes and maintain strong internal controls.
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or a relevant field preferred.
- 3+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably in construction or infrastructure industries.
- Strong expertise in job cost accounting and construction financial reporting.
- Demonstrated experience supervising accounting staff.
- Advanced proficiency in Excel and accounting systems (Acumatica, Foundations, Sage Intact, HCSS)
- Experience working with DOT or government-funded construction projects.
- CPA or CPA-track.
- Experience with construction ERP systems (e.g., Foundation, Viewpoint, Sage, Heavy Job/Heavy Bid integrations).
- Knowledge of retainage accounting, progress billing, and subcontractor compliance.
- Financial close is accurate, efficient, and predictable.
- Project managers actively rely on accounting insights to manage job profitability.
- Job cost reporting is trusted and actionable.
