Job Overview
The Columbus Dispatch is looking for a newsroom assistant to support the executive editor and other editors while ensuring the smooth functioning of the newsroom, including managing content submissions and handling reader inquiries.
Responsibilities- Support the executive editor and other editors by ensuring the newsroom functions normally, including logistics for meetings and events, managing calendars, ordering supplies, submitting invoices, and ensuring customer inquiries are properly routed or handled.
- Gather, fact‑check, proofread, and verify the identities of letters to the editor and guest columns from readers for publication, and assist with public engagement efforts such as community forums, debates or other special events.
- Process freelancer and contributor content into the content management system, including invoicing.
- Order supplies and business cards for the newsroom and keep staff cell‑phone lists updated.
- Maintain and update weekly events lists and create other specialized lists as needed.
- Support other network editors at additional sites as assigned.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including professional emails, memos, and document creation.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office products, especially Excel, and ability to perform data entry, create spreadsheets, schedule meetings, and possibly produce presentations.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to review documents for errors or typos.
- Critical thinking and problem‑solving abilities to find efficient solutions to everyday challenges.
- Effective time‑management skills, prioritizing tasks, meeting deadlines, and staying organized.
