Agency OverviewThe Ohio Court of Claims is a statutorily created court with statewide jurisdiction that hears claims against the state of Ohio for money damages, appeals from Attorney General decisions regarding claims filed under the Victims of Crime Compensation Program, and complaints from citizens regarding denial of access to public records. The Court employs approximately 30 staff members and part-time judges and is located along with the Ohio Supreme Court in the Thomas J.
Moyer Ohio Judicial Center, a restored 15‑story historical building along the Scioto River in downtown Columbus.
Reviews, processes & files documents submitted to the Court; ensures consistency with Court rules and procedures; serves as a resource for attorneys and parties to answer procedural questions.
This position must be in the office during the training period and may be eligible for a hybrid teleworking schedule.
Key Responsibilities- Receive and review filings for compliance with Rules of Civil Procedure and the Court; reject documents as necessary, citing the specific violation; return rejected documents to filing party; accept documents that are compliant.
- Receive and process new cases and incoming information, including stamping date on materials received; evaluate types of case, assign case number, and enter data into the case management system.
- Close cases upon receipt of initiating documents, such as judgments and settlement agreements.
- Receive money and issue receipts for fees and costs.
- Respond to inquiries from attorneys, litigants, or other constituents in person or by phone; determine appropriate response based on standard procedures; draft written correspondence when required.
- Provide forms, applications, and other materials to the public; retrieve files for the public; make copies of requested material.

QualificationsAssociate Clerk: High school diploma or the equivalent and 2 or more years of progressive office support experience, or equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment.
Assistant Clerk: High school diploma or the equivalent and 3 or more years experience in court case management, case processing, or a legal/administrative support setting, or equivalent of minimum class qualifications for employment.
Preferred Qualifications: Completion of associated core coursework in paralegal studies, secretarial science or business office applications from an accredited career school or community college. Prior experience in a court/legal office setting or claims management highly preferred.
