The Business Manager reports directly to the School Administrator and maintains a dotted reporting line to the HRS Director of Research. The role provides operational support for the HRS Office of Research, developing and implementing research administration processes and metrics, overseeing pre‑ and post‑award activities, and supporting HRS research programs and centers.
Responsibilities- Financial Management: Manage and review budgets across multiple funding sources for research and sponsored projects, monitor monthly expenditures, reconcile expenses, handle journal entries and fund transfers, manage financial processes such as cost sharing, and prepare purchase orders.
- Research and Sponsored Projects Administration: Partner with Office of Sponsored Programs, Grants Management Office, and Office of Research to support faculty in pre‑ and post‑award activities, manage FTE allocations, oversee grant expenditures, audit research spending, and ensure policy compliance.
- Strategic Operations: Develop and maintain procedures for research infrastructure, support strategic planning, manage financial accounting structures, conduct compliance reviews and audits, and promote a culture of customer service and continuous improvement.
- Process Improvement: Manage research and sponsored project business processes, coordinate with relevant units to resolve operational issues, advise faculty on procurement and financial policies, and identify opportunities for operational efficiency.
- Service: Oversee HRS research and sponsored projects administration, serve as a member of the School’s Administrative Team, perform additional duties and special projects as assigned.
- Bachelor’s degree in business, management, finance, or related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 2 years of relevant experience; knowledge of sponsored projects and grants management preferred.
- Experience with organizational budgets and financial systems.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and proficiency with Microsoft Office.
- Demonstrated ability to cultivate long‑term collaborative relationships with research stakeholders and implement policies that advance research operations.
- Ability to motivate and inspire contributors in a collaborative, goal‑oriented manner, focusing on continuous process improvement and customer service.
