About the FellowshipFrom first interview through Fellowship completion, Spectrum News offers students a competitive, hands‑on and exciting learning experience that positions them for future journalism and production opportunities. Selected candidates will work alongside award‑winning journalists in a professional 24/7 newsroom setting and develop marketable skills for the future.
Experience You Will GainThe Fellowship prepares participants to take on nearly any newsroom role by providing real‑world experience in pitching, shooting, editing, and writing stories that air on Spectrum News.
TracksMMJ Track
Students are trained as multimedia journalists, pitching, shooting, editing, and writing at least three stories for broadcast. They learn to use all video and audio equipment, edit and produce stories independently, research and pitch ideas, and receive weekly mentor feedback.
Multimedia Producing Track
Students develop producer and digital producer skills, including curating content, pacing and editing video, creating graphics, producing a half‑hour newscast, writing social media and web content, working through breaking news situations, and crafting clear AP‑style writing. They also meet regularly with a mentor for feedback.
Duties & Responsibilities- Participate and complete each track’s module
- Complete tasks and projects assigned by mentors
- Attend Fellowship development activities as scheduled
- Be enthusiastic, communicative, and open to learning new things every day
- Ability to organize and manage multiple priorities and work under time‑pressure deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; able to communicate solutions clearly and relate well with diverse populations
- Ability to interface with internal company personnel and build relationships
- Requires proactive adaptation and positive problem‑solving skills
- Be in pursuit of a Bachelor or Graduate degree
- Current class standing of Senior or Graduate Student; students must be 18 years of age or older
- Have a valid driver’s license for authorized driving in the state of residence
- Have authorization to work in the U.S.
- Must be willing to participate for a term of nine months (minimum of 20 hours weekly)
- Ability to work a flexible schedule that may include weekends and holidays to cover breaking news events and gain experience on a 24‑hour news channel

. The actual compensation offered will carefully consider a range of factors, including skills, qualifications, experience, and location. We comply with local wage minimums, and certain positions are eligible for additional incentive‑based compensation such as bonuses.
