Artist Year Ameri Corps Resident Teaching Artists serve as full-time teaching artists in schools across America. Artist Year has found that pairing recent arts graduates who want to have a positive impact on our nation through a service year, with dedicated teachers and school administrators, is an excellent way to expand arts education opportunities for students to improve school engagement.

Each Ameri Corps Resident Teaching Artist (RTA) will uphold the mission, values, and expectations of Artist Year, and openly contribute learnings back to the arts education and national service fields.

Requirements:
  • Highly skilled in their artistic craft, holding a degree in an artistic field or having a comparable combination of education and experience in their artistic field.
  • For example:
    Art history, art therapy, creative writing, dance, digital media, fashion design, fine arts, piano, photography, screenwriting, filmmaking, music composition, music education, theater, viola, etc.
  • U.S. citizenship, national, or legal resident:
    Due to the hiring restrictions as an Ameri Corps program, Artist Year may only accept applicants who are U.S. citizens, nationals, or legal residents
  • Able to dedicate up to 10 months to a full-time national service year (September through June).
  • Able to successfully pass all necessary background checks and clearances for working with youth.

  • Ability to remain flexible and manage changing priorities and demands on time;
  • Exceptional judgment;
  • Interpersonal maturity, compassion, and wisdom;
  • Ability to work effectively with people of all backgrounds and experiences.
  • Effective communication;
  • Easily engages others and demonstrates genuine interest in the thoughts, ideas, and opinions of others;
  • Comfortable with public speaking, writing, preparing presentations and/or speeches;
  • Possesses the ability to actively listen.
Responsibilities:

A full-time service week in a school, including:

  • Direct teaching and school common-time hours
  • Communication, meeting, planning, and preparation hours
  • Student performance or exhibition hours
  • Full attendance and participation in all training and professional development requirements for school site and Artist Year
  • Designing and teaching standards-based aligned arts education that supports school culture and goals, as well as Artist Year’s standards.
  • Design and execute arts instruction and activities that engage students.
  • Prepare and execute required Community Arts Projects (minimum of one per year)
  • Regular communication, meetings and collaboration with school staff members and the Artist Year leadership.
  • Receive and implement regular and supportive feedback from Artist Year leadership and/or school site supervisor on performance.
