The Ohio State University College of Medicine’s Department of Urology is seeking an exceptional and innovative scholar to lead a nationally recognized program as the Vice Chair for Research. The position is full-time on the tenure-track, with salary commensurate with education and experience. The successful candidate is a nationally/internationally respected scientist who has maintained an externally funded and independent research program with impact in or implications for the field of Urology.

A focus in prostate and/or bladder cancer is preferred. Demonstrated experience as a research mentor is required. Expertise in research administration is desired, but not mandatory. Academic rank and track commensurate with academic record and experience.

Position Overview

The Vice Chair for Research in the Department of Urology is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing and implementing the department’s strategic research priorities to grow the research portfolio, recruit new scientists, expand research space, increase research funding, and improve research impact. The successful candidate will develop a translational research program with clinical implications ultimately capable of advancing the care of patients with urologic disease.

The Vice Chair for Research will foster a collaborative research environment and promote a culture of discovery. She/he will ensure that the department maintains a high standard of scientific excellence and innovation. Joint appointments with other departments across the University will be available and encouraged.

Department/Division Overview

The Department of Urology at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is nationally recognized by U.S. News & World Report (#24) for delivering the highest quality of care for the treatment of urologic conditions. Our mission is to alleviate patient suffering from urologic disorders through an integrative model of extraordinary clinical care, patient-centered discovery and educational innovation in service of the citizens of Ohio and beyond.

Our vision is to transform the lives of our patients through this comprehensive approach to urologic practice. The OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center (OSUCCC) – James provides a collaborative research environment. The overarching research priorities include immuno-oncology, cancer engineering, translational genomics, cancer prevention, and survivorship. The OSUCCC – James has over 360 researchers and conducts clinical trials in partnership with the James Cancer Hospital.

Duties

And Responsibilities
  • Research Leadership:
    Develop a translational research program within the Department of Urology. Recruit and retain established and emerging scientists. Foster an environment of scientific inquiry and innovation. Lead high-impact research projects and initiatives and promote interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Funding and Grants:
    Identify and pursue funding opportunities from federal agencies, private foundations, and industry partners. Oversee the preparation and submission of single and multi-PI grant proposals. Manage research budgets and allocate resources.
  • Mentorship:
    Teach and mentor students, trainees, and junior faculty with commitment to recruiting and developing women and underserved minorities.
Qualifications
  • MD, DO, PhD, or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field.
  • Actively funded research program in basic or translational research.
  • Research designed to lead to clinical trials.
  • Proven track record of independent research and grant acquisition.
  • Experience in a leadership role within an academic or research setting.
  • Extensive publication record in peer-reviewed journals.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proficiency in research methodologies and data analysis.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach and mentor undergraduate, medical and postdoctoral students.
  • Exceptional organizational and communication skills.
  • Qualifications for an appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor rank.
