ResponsibilitiesThe CARE Senior Specialist for Academic Success and Retention (ASR) plays a pivotal role within the Office of Community, Access, Retention and Empowerment (CARE) team, reporting directly to the Director for Student Academic Success. Collaborating closely with fellow members of the CARE team, as well as various stakeholders across Undergraduate Education & Student Support and other University Offices, the ASR spearheads comprehensive strategies for enhancing undergraduate student academic success and retention.
This position plays a critical leadership role in advancing holistic, data-informed academic support initiatives and curriculum that advance student success in first- and second-year foundational STEM courses. The role analyzes service utilization, outcomes, and student feedback to drive continuous improvement. In collaboration with STEM departments, especially mathematics, physics, and chemistry, the ASR reviews course-level performance data to identify barriers and co‑develop curriculum‑aligned supports and targeted interventions that strengthen student achievement in key gateway courses.
The ASR also oversees ACE Coaching operations—recruiting, training, and scheduling academic coaches—and ensures services promote effective learning strategies, confidence, and engagement. In addition to program management, the ASR oversees personnel and budget operations to ensure the efficient and cost-effective delivery of CARE’s student success initiatives. The role stays current on emerging best practices, conducting studies, developing proposals, and preparing reports for internal and external stakeholders.
Leveraging data from the College of Engineering and CARE programs, the ASR provides leadership with actionable metrics to inform decision‑making. The position may advise a CARE‑connected student organization, supporting student leaders in developing initiatives aligned with CARE goals. The ASR collaborates closely with the Director for Student Academic Success to advance retention priorities and assume leadership responsibilities in the director’s absence.
Flexibility is essential, as the position may require occasional evening or weekend commitments, as well as travel. Significant interaction with various stakeholders is inherent to the role, opportunities for remote or hybrid work schedules are limited.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or STEM field
- Demonstrated experience leading and/or serving in a supportive role successfully implementing student academic success programs
- Considerable experience advocating for student academic success and developing programming for first- and second-year students
- Working knowledge of, and experience with, high impact practices for higher education
- Advent in Word, Excel, Access, and Power Point
- Excellent communication and organizational skills
- Creativity, innovative, flexibility and self‑motivation
- Attention to detail and ability to execute complex projects without instruction
