Responsibilities

The Senior Academic Advisor in the College of Arts and Sciences fosters student success by defining and implementing proactive strategies that help students stay on track to fulfill their educational goals. The individual in this role advises students in assigned department(s) on university policy and procedures, program and degree requirements, and related academic matters; consistently directs students to appropriate resources; identifies new resources and collaborations for resolving student cases.

This position is expected to primarily support the Social and Behavioral Sciences (SBS) division, with potential collaboration across other areas of the college as needed.

This Senior Advisor will contribute to the college advising team by cultivating an enhanced advising experience to ensure holistic advising for students across the assigned division. The Senior Advisor is a mentor to new advisors, provides leadership in the advising community, and assists with training new advisors. The Senior Advisor coordinates student retention efforts to advising staff across the assigned division.

They will develop communication templates and messaging strategies, provide reports and data to support retention efforts, and assist in reaching out to students. The Senior Advisor will collaborate with college leaders to develop training and workshops for advisors across the assigned division and/or college to proactively engage students and bolster a culture of student success leveraging college data and evidence‑based practices.

The Senior Advisor serves as liaison with the central advising office in the college, the divisional deans, and the Associate Dean for Workplace Culture and Student Success to advance our student success efforts. They will provide additional support to assigned department(s) and work on special projects as assigned by supervisor.

Required Qualifications

Master’s degree required. Two years of relevant experience. Deep understanding of programs, specialty areas, and academic and university policies. Demonstrates adaptive relational skills. Demonstrates superior communication skills; able to provide detail, depth, and context. Able to recommend policy, practice, and program changes to unit and/or university leadership. Understands and follows FERPA guidelines; trains, interprets, and explains FERPA guidelines to colleagues and stakeholders.

Able to support/mentor other advisors on complex topics. Demonstrates sophisticated cultural competence across multiple cultures and/or identities. Able to identify and predict ramifications of current and proposed policies and practices on the student population and their programs.

Desired Qualifications

Four years of relevant experience. Utilizes and integrates historical knowledge of the academic advising profession.

The College of Arts and Sciences is the largest college and the academic heart of the university. The College hosts 81 majors.
