Position Overview

Introduction to Film Studies Instructor

The Introduction to Film Studies Instructor will lead one or more sections of "Introduction to Film Studies" (FILMSTD 2270.01, 2270.02, 2271).

Introduction to Film Studies offers a broad introduction to the field of film studies for majors. Students consider major aesthetic, critical, and theoretical approaches that have shaped the field of film studies, and become familiar with a variety of critical approaches to media. Students learn to analyze, interpret, and evaluate major forms of human thought, cultures, and expression; demonstrate capacities for aesthetic and culturally informed understanding;

experience the arts, and reflect on that experience critically and creatively.

The Introduction to Film Studies instructor will lead students in exploring various concepts of film theory, history, and analysis, through a variety of films and theoretical texts to deepen an understanding of formal characteristics of the medium. This semester-long course meets in person for 80-minutes per day, two sessions per week; specific meeting times vary by assignment.

Performance Objectives

  • Communicate and collaborate with faculty supervisor to carry out course activities and objectives as outlined in an approved syllabus.
  • Lead all course meetings and support students' achievement of the following learning objectives:
  • Students will investigate and identify various concepts of film theory, history, and analysis.
  • Students will identify important concepts and issues addressed by film theory.
  • Students will demonstrate critical thinking skills and compose written and oral arguments.
  • Students will build new skills as a beginning film scholar with the goal of producing work that follows field-specific criteria.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required:

Advanced Degree (MA or PhD) in Film Studies or other comparable field/graduate degree. Teaching experience, preferable at the undergraduate level.
