ADL / Orientation & Mobility Instructor

Are you an experienced in vision rehabilitation or Orientation and Mobility (O&M) instructor ready for a rewarding career in public service? We are seeking a dedicated professional who is excited to help individuals with disabilities achieve greater independence and success. In this role, you will provide instructional services across a statewide coverage area to individuals who are blind or visually impaired.

Your responsibilities will include assessing and training clients in essential travel skills such as indoor and outdoor navigation, street crossing, and the use of public transportation, as well as guiding them in the effective use of adaptive equipment like long canes and support canes. Additionally, you will support clients in utilizing their residual vision (as appropriate), recommending sun lenses, and using distance low vision aids.

You may also provide training in Activities of Daily Living, including kitchen tasks, communication, financial management, home management, personal management, and Braille. If you are passionate about empowering individuals to lead independent lives and eager to bring your ADL or O&M expertise into a rewarding public service role, we want to hear from you! Assessment and training may take place in the participant's home, training site, or workplace.

Therefore, significant in-state travel during work hours is required. The selected candidate must provide own transportation/driver or, in order to operate a state vehicle, must have a valid driver's license.

A Successful ADL / O&M Instructor Has:

  • Time management, case management, and prioritization skills.
  • An understanding of adult and youth learning styles.
  • Experience working effectively with individuals of varying backgrounds and cultures.
  • Ability to analyze and assess participant skills, training needs and limitations.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
  • Ability to use computer applications to produce timely, clear and readable reports.
  • Ability to collaborate with a team.
