Summary
Core Molding Technologies is seeking a Senior Materials Engineer to lead material and process development efforts from concept to commercialization. This role will serve as a subject matter expert in composite materials, driving innovation, improving process scalability, and supporting cross-functional engineering, quality, and customer initiatives. Ideal candidates will have a strong technical background in materials science, hands-on lab and testing experience, and a passion for mentoring others while delivering practical solutions.
Responsibilities- Design, select, and optimize materials to meet performance, cost, and sustainability targets
- Develop and refine manufacturing processes for efficiency, quality, and scalability
- Lead cross-functional development projects from concept through launch
- Serve as subject matter expert on materials science and composites
- Conduct material testing, characterization, and performance validation
- Partner with suppliers, internal teams, and external labs for sourcing, testing, and troubleshooting
- Identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvement through materials innovation
- Oversee lab instrumentation, cleanliness, calibrations, and chemical inventories
- Interpret and guide chromatographic, FTIR, spectrophotometric, and other analytical testing
- Assist with root cause analysis and guide corrective actions using tools such as FMEA and 5 Whys
- Maintain accurate documentation of test results, process data, and materials specifications
- Improve and maintain materials database for internal use
- Provide training and mentorship to junior engineers and technicians
- Ensure compliance with ISO 9001, ISO 14001, and applicable environmental regulations
- Bachelor’s degree in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, or related field
- Minimum 6 years of experience in material development, processing, or lab-based engineering roles
- Strong background in materials testing, lab procedures, and documentation
- Professional communication skills with ability to collaborate cross-functionally and externally
- Strong problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and familiarity with database management
- Working knowledge of composites and manufacturing environments
- Master’s degree in engineering or chemistry-related discipline
- 5+ years of experience in the molding, automotive, or manufacturing industries
- Experience with materials synthesis, advanced analytical chemistry, and/or sustainability initiatives
- Hands-on experience with lab equipment calibration, quality control, and material safety compliance
This position requires frequent work in both laboratory and manufacturing environments, including interaction with plant floor operations. Standard office equipment and lab instrumentation will be used regularly.
Physical DemandsThe role may involve standing, walking, sitting, climbing stairs, or lifting materials and equipment up to 40 lbs as needed.
ScheduleFull-time, Monday through Friday. Some extended hours or weekend support may be required depending on customer timelines or testing schedules.
