Job Overview

Applies specialized engineering expertise within the field of high-energy physics to support PI-led scientific research by contributing to the design, development, testing, and implementation of conceptual and detailed engineering solutions. Under general direction, assists with the creation of designs, models, and prototypes using computer-aided design, documentation systems, databases, and manufacturing and/or inspection software tools.

In collaboration with principal investigators, senior engineers, and collaborators from partnering institutions, implements and tests specialized electronics and firmware for use in experimental research environments. Supports the commissioning, installation, and maintenance of hardware components and subsystems for collaborative experiments, which may be located at national or international laboratories.

Contributes to the programming and configuration of application-specific firmware and software, and assists with system integration, validation, and troubleshooting activities. Participates in ongoing operation and maintenance activities by diagnosing issues, supporting upgrades, and documenting engineering solutions within assigned areas of responsibility.

Work is performed primarily through individual technical contributions that are integrated into small-, mid-, and large-scale project teams. Applies professional judgment within defined parameters and established engineering practices. Receives general guidance on project objectives and priorities; work products are reviewed for technical accuracy and sound reasoning.

May provide technical guidance and task coordination for undergraduate and graduate student assistants or technicians, including training on tools, processes, and safety practices. May assist principal investigators with the preparation of technical documentation, reports, or proposal materials by contributing engineering input and supporting information.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in physics, engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Minimum of two years of relevant applied engineering or physics research experience
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally, including occasional extended travel
Desired Qualifications
  • Experience assisting with digital electronics design, including schematic review and PCB layout support
  • Experience programming or modifying firmware using schematic-based designs or HDL (e.g., Verilog, VHDL)
  • Hands‑on experience with electronics assembly, soldering (through‑hole and SMT), and board‑level troubleshooting using standard test equipment
  • Experience working with vendors on fabrication or assembly of electronics components
  • Experience collaborating with distributed research teams to support deployed systems and resolve technical issues
Additional Information

The pay range for this job profile is $70,100 - $91,600. The offer for this position will fall within this range based on internal equity, the unit's available budget, and the candidate's qualifications.
