Summary of Job Responsibilities

Manages the project during the Pre-construction Phase. Hires design consultants and manages the design process. Conducts meetings with the Owner and designers. Keeps track of the evolution of the scope of work, and notifies the team of the cost implications of scope changes. Prepares Cost Estimates, Outline Specifications, and Value Engineering alternatives. Investigates site conditions and agency requirements. Provides early notification of projects risks and constraints.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead the team during pre-construction:
    Initiates and leads project team meetings, establishes early goals, tracks progress, acts as primary contact with owner.
  • Defining the scope of work:
    Interpret design intent, understand building components, perform preliminary design work, investigate site conditions, coordinate with consultants, prepare abstracts, perform quantity take-offs, develop recommendations.
  • Developing the project strategy:
    Draft initial project strategy and preliminary construction schedule.
  • Analyzing project risks:
    Evaluate and report project risks.
  • Pricing the work:
    Determine production rates, prepare staffing plan, organize bid process, solicit cost input, analyze subcontractor pricing, develop conceptual estimates, provide cost analysis of design changes, maintain tracking tools.
  • Procuring subcontractors and materials:
    Perform procurement of subcontractors including bidding, analysis, and scope definition.
  • Presenting the estimate:
    Make presentations to Ruscilli Associates and owners, support the team leader, prepare custom estimating reports.
  • Supervisory responsibilities:

    None.

Education and/or Experience
  • Four year college degree in a related field (Engineering or Construction Management).
  • Two to four years of related experience, or training/experience combination.
  • Great aptitude for understanding design and cost information, and for converting that into meaningful reports.
  • Flexibility to learn new systems and construction methods.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registrations

Degree from accredited college or university in Engineering or Construction Management (or related field). Continuing education is required. Registration in a related organization is encouraged.

Science, Math, and Computer Skills
  • Apply science and mathematical concepts such as geometry, trigonometry, civil, soils, heating/cooling, electrical, structural engineering.
  • Use programs to collect and evaluate production and cost information, and produce construction schedules.
  • Use various equipment for digitizing information and scanning/copying documents. Minor programming and database skills are useful.
Language Skills
  • Read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers, building authorities.
Reasoning Ability

Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with abstract and concrete variables.

Physical Demands

Frequent standing; walking; sitting; use hands to handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk or hear; taste or smell. Frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception required.
