Under general supervision, is responsible for revising, updating, and maintaining the geographic information system (GIS) databases that are specific to individual departments and/or divisions, but which are available through the Citywide GIS for general use; performs related duties as required.
(Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.)
Responsibilities- Operates computer workstation to update maps as new data is received related to new subdivisions, capital improvements projects, zoning requirements, utility information, and other projects;
- Creates and prepares maps and graphics for departmental and public presentations, using GIS software;
- Maintains and updates GIS databases using off-the-shelf GIS software and related software applications;
- Collects, prepares, and digitizes spatial data into GIS format;
- Conducts data collection in the field to include the use of global positioning system (GPS) equipment;
- Creates and maintains links between map files/attributes and various databases;
- Reads and interprets source documents such as civil engineering plans, plot maps, planning and zoning maps, and legal descriptions;
- Conducts mapping research, in the field and the office, to resolve conflicting information, ensure accuracy of the data, and respond to questions and concerns;
- Enters departmental/divisional GIS database information into the Citywide GIS database for use in other departments/divisions, outside agencies, and the general public;
- Maintains proficiency with GIS technology through continuing education in order to stay current with developments and trends in the field;
- Attends meetings involving GIS projects.
Two (2) years of experience using GIS software such as Esri ArcGIS for Desktop (Arc Map, Arc Catalog, Arc Toolbox). Substitution(s):
Significant coursework (24 quarter hours or 16 semester hours) in geographic information systems or coursework which includes the use of GIS software may substitute for the required experience.
