Senior Automation Engineer
The Senior Automation Engineer is responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and continuously improving automation systems that support manufacturing and operational excellence. This role requires strong technical expertise in industrial automation, the ability to lead projects independently, and collaboration across engineering, maintenance, IT, and operations teams.
Responsibilities- Design, develop, program, and support automated systems including PLCs, HMIs, SCADA, robotics, vision systems, and process controls.
- Lead automation projects from concept through commissioning, including requirements definition, system design, testing, and deployment.
- Conduct testing and troubleshooting of automation systems to ensure functionality and performance.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex automation, controls, and integration issues to minimize downtime and improve system reliability.
- Develop and maintain control logic, documentation, standards, and best practices for automation systems.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (manufacturing, quality, maintenance, IT, vendors) to ensure automation solutions meet business and operational needs.
- Support plant operations by providing technical expertise, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Manage and coordinate work with external vendors and system integrators as needed.
- Provide technical support and guidance to customers and internal stakeholders.
- Ensure automation systems comply with safety standards, cybersecurity requirements, and industry regulations.
- Mentor junior engineers or technicians and provide technical guidance when needed.
- Participate in equipment upgrades, new product introductions, and capacity expansion projects.
- Stay up to date with the latest automation technologies and industry trends.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Automation, Electrical, Mechanical, Controls, or related field) or equivalent experience.
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in industrial automation, controls engineering, or manufacturing engineering.
- Strong hands‑on experience with PLC programming (e.g., Rockwell Automation/Allen‑Bradley, Siemens, or equivalent).
- Experience with HMI/SCADA systems and industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Profinet, etc.).
- Proven experience in designing and implementing automation solutions.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex electrical and control system issues.
- Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work independently with minimal supervision.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
- Experience with robotics, motion control, and/or machine vision systems.
- Knowledge of manufacturing execution systems (MES) and integration with plant‑floor automation.
- Familiarity with industry standards such as NFPA, IEC, OSHA, and safety‑rated controls.
- Project leadership or informal team lead experience.
- Experience with continuous improvement methodologies (Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen).
- Combination of office, plant‑floor, and equipment startup/commissioning work.
- May require occasional off‑shift or weekend support during critical projects or system issues.
- Some travel may be required for vendor visits, training, or project support.
Preferred candidates will be located near one of our hub locations:
Columbus, OH;
Muncie, IN; or Nebraska City, NE. This position requires 50% travel.
