Lead Transportation Design Engineer

Our Transportation team is seeking a motivated and experienced Lead Transportation Design Engineer. This role requires strong technical and design management skills to successfully deliver highway-related infrastructure projects across the region. You will have the opportunity to work on multidisciplinary transportation projects focused on highway, roadway, and interchange design for clients such as the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT), adjacent Departments of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). counties, and local municipalities.

The final candidate could be located in Columbus, Cleveland or Cincinnati, OH as well as Troy, MI.

• Provide technical leadership over all aspects of highway and roadway design, including support for design-build transportation projects, adhering to ODOT standards and AASHTO, FHWA, and MUTCD requirements.
• Lead the preparation of roadway designs at the conceptual, preliminary, and final stages, covering geometrics, alignments, grading, and maintaining traffic according to ODOT procedures.
• Develop specifications, cost estimates, and final bid packages using ODOT standard plans and statewide engineering details.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams (roadway, drainage, structural, traffic, public involvement, environmental) and provide technical oversight on roadway and planning design tasks.
• Conduct detailed plan quality reviews and engage in value engineering studies aligned with Ohio design guidance.
• Direct and coordinate design engineers and technicians to ensure projects progress on schedule and within budget, while mentoring early career engineers to develop high-quality design plans.
• Engage directly with clients to maintain strong relationships and identify upcoming opportunities to support pursuit and proposal efforts.

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
• Professional Engineer (PE) license in Ohio and/or Michigan.
• Extensive experience delivering transportation projects within the highway market sector, including major infrastructure programs.
• Proficiency with Micro Station, Open Roads Designer, InRoads, and Civil 3D, commonly used for DOT project development.
• Demonstrated experience with roadway design for state DOTs, with a strong preference for ODOT projects.
• Strong technical background in traffic engineering, highway design, and roadway drainage, with expertise in AASHTO, FHWA, and MUTCD standards.

• Extensive 3D modeling experience using Open Roads; strong Micro Station/Open Roads proficiency.
• Working knowledge of Project Wise.
• Active engagement in professional organizations.
• Previous experience in alternative delivery (Design Build or P3) transportation projects.
