We are currently seeking a Structural Engineer Inspector in our Columbus, OH office. As a Structural Engineer Inspector you will conduct thorough visual site observations and provide inspections for assigned projects to ensure compliance with applicable codes and project specifications. This role requires knowledge and hands‑on experience with observation and testing standards related to earthwork, concrete, masonry, steel, and wood construction.

You will work closely with contractors, engineers, and project stakeholders to verify proper implementation of structural elements and report any discrepancies observed during inspections. While this position does not involve performing any construction materials testing, you must possess a strong understanding of construction practices and material behavior to assess site conditions and ensure structural integrity.

Principal Responsibilities
  • Perform field observations and inspections of structural elements of buildings and other structures.
  • Function as an International Building Code defined Special Inspector on projects designed by the company or by other companies.
  • Produce well‑written and organized reports.
  • Assist project design teams as required.
  • Interpret and evaluate field conditions and laboratory reports.
  • Conduct job‑site visits and photograph relevant conditions for documentation.
  • Document all observations and discrepancies in detailed written reports and collaborate with the Structural Engineer of Record (SEoR) to provide direction for remedial action.
  • Perform shop drawing reviews and provide mark‑ups to the SEoR for approval.
  • Assist with responding to requests for information (RFIs), interpreting test results, and evaluating contractor change orders.

  • Read and understand construction documents including drawings, specifications, and shop drawings.
  • Manage and control own schedule to ensure timely services on all assigned projects.
  • Work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Maintain attention to detail and strong problem‑solving skills.
  • Be eager to adapt to new challenges.
  • Possess exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be proficient in Microsoft and MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Travel up to 50% with occasional overnight stays.
  • This position is not eligible for sponsorship.
Education and Experience
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent preferred.
  • One year of experience preferred; prior experience in structural inspection or the building design consulting industry preferred.
  • Possession of or desire to obtain a recognized certification related to structural inspection (e.g., ICC General Requirements, ICC Reinforced Concrete, ICC Structural Masonry, ICC Structural Steel and Bolting, ICC Structural Welding, ICC Master of Special Inspections, AWS‑Certified Weld Inspector) preferred.
Physical Requirements
  • Regularly required to sit, walk, stand, talk, see, hear, and lift objects up to 25 pounds.
  • Occasionally required to drive, kneel, stoop, crouch, crawl, reach with hands or arms, and grasp or pull.
  • Will have limited exposure to outside weather conditions and loud noises.
