The Opportunity

In this role, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Function as a technical specialist in the areas of conventional and advanced wastewater treatment
  • Use processes such as physical/chemical primary treatment, conventional activated sludge, biological nutrient removal, fixed‑film processes, membrane bio‑reactors (M ), sidestream treatment, tertiary filtration, auxiliary wet‑weather treatment, and disinfection
  • Under supervision develop and apply wastewater treatment and engineering techniques, concepts, and approaches to complex engineering problems for treatment of various wastewater with varying quality
  • Primarily focus on growing our rapidly expanding business in the Midwest, while also handling diverse opportunities in wastewater as part of a team that directs process design for wastewater treatment projects worldwide
The Team

Black & Veatch Process Engineers develop technical solutions that are critical to winning work and drive design deliverables for critical infrastructure projects with community benefits. Our team of over 200 process engineers supports water, industrial, next‑generation agriculture, LNG, hydrogen, fertilizer, and carbon capture businesses among others.

Key Responsibilities

Engineering:

  • Prepare complex engineering deliverables including process models, mass‑balance calculations, design criteria, P&’s, trade‑off studies, and master‑planning studies
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously with complex technical challenges
  • Serve as a technical specialist providing guidance to project teams in conventional and/or emerging wastewater treatment technologies
  • Perform complex research, including applied research with bench, pilot, and full‑scale testing to select or assess treatment processes and incorporate data into process models
  • Collaborate with the process team to develop recommendations for appropriate treatment processes, equipment, and/or materials selection
  • Engage in collection, assimilation, analysis, and management of data for process modeling and design work
  • Prepare process models and carry out complex engineering calculations following standard methods and principles
  • Develop life‑cycle assessment, including conceptual‑level life‑cycle costs and environmental and social benefits, to evaluate and select resilient treatment solutions
  • Actively coordinate with internal and external team members for successful project execution

Client Focus:

  • Assist with identification of key client interests and drivers for ongoing projects and new business prospects
  • Develop creative solutions and approaches to accommodate client goals and objectives
  • Provide support to business development or pursuit activities, including pre‑positioning meetings, proposal development, client interviews, and identification of winning sales messages
  • Attend and present on state‑of‑the‑art wastewater treatment projects and thought‑leadership ideas at local, regional, and national conferences

Engineering Standards:

  • Provide guidance and direction on department design guides, standards, systems, and applicable engineering codes related to water quality and treatment
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and updating engineering standards
  • Provide technical guidance to others regarding projects and disciplines

Quality / Continuous Improvement:

  • Apply knowledge and comply with Black & Veatch quality program relative to assigned tasks
  • Work in compliance with Black & Veatch quality program
  • Provide related guidance and direction to more junior team members
  • Support continuous improvement and change management efforts
  • Actively coordinate with all other internal/external team members on moderately complex projects
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in civil, environmental, or chemical engineering
  • 5 years of experience in wastewater treatment process design
  • Experience with using modern process simulators such as Bio Win, GPS‑X, Sumo, and/or Simba
  • Effective written and oral communications; strong drive for results, priority setting, planning, delegation, informing, and listening skills
  • Eager to learn and contribute to team success
