Lead and support compression molding operations within manufacturing facility driving process excellence, optimizing tooling and fixtures, and ensuring high standards of quality, efficiency, and continuous improvement. Provide engineering support for compression molding operations, including tooling, fixtures, process development, and work instructions for SMC, RTM, RIM, and injection molding. Operate and troubleshoot high-tonnage compression presses (250–4,500 tons), addressing failures such as overheating, pressure loss, servo valve faults, and safety alarms.
Lead mold set-up and changeovers for dies up to 80,000 tons and implement SMED projects to reduce downtime for coated and non-coated SMC and RTM pieces. Drive process optimization, scrap reduction, and quality improvement initiatives across molding lines. Troubleshoot complex molding defects including porosity, blisters, non-fills, cracking, under-curing, and contamination using root cause analysis and hydraulic schematics. Develop and maintain Control Plans, PFMEAs, SOPs, and flow diagrams aligned with APQP, PPAP, ISO
9001, and IATF 16949 standards. Design and modify tooling, fixturing, and gauges using CAD software. Support robotic routing/drilling and vacuum system integration. Support In-Mold Coating (IMC) processes and post-primer mixing to deliver cured and primed parts in a single cycle. Optimize application settings for various thermoset materials to meet specific customer requirements for interior and exterior components. Ensure part traceability and process control through tracking systems for both raw materials and work-in-process.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams in quality, maintenance, and product development to drive lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives. Manage steam heating systems, including electronic/manual steam trees and thermolators. Design steam manifolds to support rapid tool changes. Supervise approx. 9 Mold Technicians and Set-up Technicians.
