Position Overview

The Transportation Hydraulics Senior Engineer/Project Manager provides leadership support in project delivery, business development, and growth of HDR’s Transportation Hydraulics Group in Ohio.

Primary duties include: assisting the Transportation Hydraulics Lead in strategic planning, overseeing technical project delivery, quality control, staff development and morale, and business development and marketing support.

  • The Transportation Hydraulics Senior Engineer/Project Manager will serve as Project Manager / Hydraulics Lead on key projects, participating in training, development, and management of personnel.
  • Promote HDR through active engagement in professional organizations to increase industry visibility, coordinate with client managers and marketing staff, and identify projects and contract opportunities with existing and new clients.
  • Project Management duties will focus on state government, municipal, and local water resources clients, handling hydrologic analyses, hydraulic modeling and design for flood mitigation, stream restoration, and transportation drainage projects across all project phases.
  • Direct and coordinate work of multidisciplinary teams, ensuring schedule and budget compliance, quality control, and supervision of highway/roadway design teams.
  • Responsible for all aspects of complex small to medium projects or routine large projects.
  • Perform project and task‑level management, leading technical staff and providing hands‑on project engineering for various water resource projects.
  • Manage and develop H&H models (1D/2D hydraulic models) to support design of flood and transportation hydraulic projects, including stream rehabilitation, culverts, bridges, floodplain impacts, and stormwater collection systems.
  • Develop engineering design documents, plans, specifications, cost estimates, and contract documents for water resources infrastructure.
  • Lead preparation of technical and non‑technical reports and presentations, including data visualization.
  • Assist with business development activities, client relations, marketing pursuits, and project proposals.
  • Work independently and plan, organize, and assist teams of small to medium size professionals and technicians.
  • Implement HDR’s technology, standards, project delivery practices, equipment, tools, and training programs for successful project execution.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering or related discipline (required).
  • 8+ years of experience in hydraulics engineering, water resource engineering, and permitting for transportation projects.
  • 4+ years of Project Management experience.
  • Experience with water resources planning, hydrology/hydraulics, and drainage/flood control design.
  • Successful project leadership experience.
  • Strong leadership, planning, and mentoring experience.
  • Technical proficiency in hydrologic and hydraulic analyses, scour investigations, erosion and sediment control, stormwater management design, waterway and NPDES permitting, quantity & cost estimates, and specifications.
  • Experience with standard drainage analysis and design packages (AutoCAD Civil 3D, Micro Station Open Roads Designer, StormCAD).
  • HEC‑RAS 1D/2D and/or SRH‑2D river modeling experience (preferred).
  • ArcGIS Pro and HEC‑HMS experience (preferred).
  • Project experience with ODOT and Ohio transportation clients.
  • Local candidate preferred.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
  • 7+ years of related experience.
  • Minimum 2 years of project management experience.
  • Professional Engineering license recognized by the relevant licensing board (PE or P.Eng).
  • MS Office and MS Project experience (Access experience a plus).
  • Demonstrated leadership skills.
