Calgon Carbon Corporation Careers seeks an Environmental Health and Safety Engineer to support our Chemicals operations within the Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) department. You will develop, implement, and maintain EHS programs to ensure regulatory compliance, reduce risk, and drive a strong safety culture. Responsibilities include hazard analysis, incident investigation, training, audits, and support for process safety and environmental permitting. Collaborate cross-functionally to promote continuous improvement and sustainable practices in a safety-focused, innovative, and mission-driven environment protecting people and the planet.
Responsibilities
- Ensure day-to-day compliance with OSHA, EPA, and applicable state and local regulations in a manufacturing environment
- Conduct risk assessments, process hazard analyses, and job safety analyses to identify and mitigate EHS hazards
- Support Management of Change (MOC) reviews for new or modified processes, equipment, and materials
- Develop, update, and implement EHS policies, procedures, work instructions, and inspection checklists
- Analyze incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions, perform root cause analyses, and drive corrective and preventive actions
- Track, analyze, and report EHS performance metrics and trends to plant and corporate stakeholders
- Coordinate and support regulatory inspections, third-party audits, and internal EHS assessments
- Lead or assist with environmental programs related to air and water emissions, waste management, and spill prevention
- Collaborate with process and manufacturing engineers to design and implement engineering controls that improve safety and reduce environmental impact
- Plan and deliver EHS-related training for employees and contractors on topics such as PPE, hazard communication, lockout/tagout, and confined space entry
- Support emergency response planning, drills, and readiness, and coordinate with local emergency responders as needed
- Promote a proactive safety culture aligned with Calgon Carbon's focus on sustainability, innovation, and community well-being
- Participate in continuous improvement and sustainability initiatives to reduce the environmental footprint of manufacturing operations
Required Skills
- Knowledge of OSHA and EPA regulations applicable to manufacturing operations
- Process safety management (PSM) fundamentals
- Environmental permit compliance (air, water, and waste)
- Risk assessment and process hazard analysis (PHA) techniques such as HAZOP or What-If
- Incident investigation and root cause analysis
- Industrial hygiene principles and exposure assessment
- Development of EHS procedures, work instructions, and training materials
- Data analysis and EHS metrics reporting (Excel or similar tools)
- Familiarity with ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 standards
- Project management and prioritization in a manufacturing setting
- Technical writing and documentation for regulatory and internal audiences
- Strong verbal communication and coaching skills with manufacturing staff
