What You'll Do
This unique position in state government combines public policy with public finance. Budget Management Analysts maintain a portfolio of state agencies, boards, or commissions, review agency budget and policy requests, and make recommendations to OBM leadership and members of the Governor’s office in developing the state’s $100+ billion budget. The role also includes monitoring day‑to‑day finances of assigned state agencies, working with the State Controlling Board, researching public policy, and delivering oral and written presentations.
The BMA position offers steady career advancement and serves as an entry point for many leaders in Ohio state government.
- Analyze budget requests and budgetary/programmatic data to identify trends, variances, and potential concerns.
- Think critically and draw valid conclusions regarding the impact of state programs.
- Demonstrate excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Confidently make clear and coherent recommendations in group settings with executive‑level staff.
- Work independently while meeting team goals and needs.
- 36 months training or 36 months experience in public budgeting or finance.
- Or completion of an undergraduate major core program in public or business administration, public policy, finance, economics, resource management or related area with 12 months work experience in public budgeting or finance.
- Or completion of a graduate major core program in public or business administration, public policy, finance, economics, resource management or related area.
- Or 12 months as Budget/Management Analyst 1, 63221.
- Or equivalent of the minimum class qualifications for employment noted above.
