Position Summary
The Commercial Loan Credit Analyst / Underwriter is responsible for performing in-depth credit analysis and underwriting for commercial loan opportunities while also supporting loan processing and pipeline coordination. This role plays a key part in evaluating risk, structuring transactions, and supporting efficient loan execution. The position works closely with lending, credit, and operations teams to ensure sound credit decisions, timely processing, and high-quality loan documentation.
This is a hands‑on, hybrid role within a growing organization, offering exposure to the full credit lifecycle and direct impact on portfolio quality and lending operations.
- Analyze borrower financial statements, tax returns, and supporting documentation to assess creditworthiness.
- Perform cash flow analysis, including global cash flow and debt service coverage (DSCR).
- Evaluate collateral quality, market conditions, and borrower/guarantor strength and experience.
- Structure loan terms and provide risk‑based recommendations with clearly articulated mitigants.
- Identify and communicate risks, structural considerations, and approval conditions.
- Prepare clear, concise, and well‑supported Credit Approval Memos (CAMs) and loan packages.
- Present and support transactions for loan committee consideration.
- Review loan structures and documentation for completeness, accuracy, and alignment with approval conditions.
- Support loan processing activities, including documentation tracking, file completeness review, and coordination with internal teams.
- Assist in managing loan pipeline flow to ensure timely underwriting progression and closing.
- Partner with Loan Operations on post‑closing follow‑up and outstanding documentation needs.
- Identify and help resolve processing or documentation issues before they impact closing timelines.
- Work closely with lenders, credit leadership, loan operations, and third‑party partners including appraisers, title companies, and legal counsel.
- Interface with borrowers and other stakeholders as needed to gather information and support deal execution.
- Maintain alignment with internal policies, procedures, and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Timely and accurate underwriting and credit memo preparation.
- Strong risk identification and well‑structured credit recommendations.
- Efficient loan pipeline progression and processing support.
- High‑quality, complete loan files and documentation.
- Contribution to overall portfolio quality and adherence to credit standards.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Real Estate, or a related field; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
- 3–5+ years of experience in commercial credit analysis, underwriting, or lending support.
- Experience with commercial real estate and/or commercial & industrial (C&I) lending preferred.
- Strong financial analysis capabilities, including spreading financial statements and analyzing tax returns.
- Experience with cash flow modeling, including DSCR and global cash flow analysis.
- Ability to assess collateral value and evaluate market conditions.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and standard business applications (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Experience with core banking or loan origination systems required;
Finastra experience a plus.
- Analytical Thinking — Evaluates complex financial information to identify key risks and form sound credit conclusions.
- Business Acumen — Understands lending decisions in the context of profitability, portfolio impact, and competitive market dynamics.
- Communication — Strong written and verbal skills; produces clear, professional credit memos and presentations.
- Organization & Execution — Manages multiple transactions simultaneously and consistently meets deadlines.
- Collaboration — Works effectively across lending, credit, and operations teams to advance shared goals.
- Adaptability — Comfortable working in a dynamic, evolving environment with shifting priorities and deal flow.
This is a hybrid position. The work environment is typical of a professional office setting with a moderate noise level. The role is primarily sedentary, requiring extended periods of sitting and computer use. Occasional standing, movement within the office, and light lifting (up to 15 lbs.) may be required.
