Staff Accountant

Description We are looking for a detail-oriented Staff Accountant to join a finance team in Columbus, Ohio in a contract-to-permanent capacity. This position offers the opportunity to contribute to core accounting operations while building broader ownership across month-end activities, reconciliations, tax support, and financial analysis. The ideal candidate will bring strong Excel capabilities, sound general ledger knowledge, and the ability to manage multiple priorities with accuracy and professionalism.

Responsibilities:

- Prepare and post month-end journal entries, beginning with a shared workload and progressing toward broader ownership of the close process.

- Perform account and bank reconciliations, investigate variances, and resolve discrepancies to support accurate financial reporting.

- Assist with corporate tax-related accounting tasks and compile documentation needed for audit requests and support schedules.

- Analyze branch-level financial results to identify unusual activity, trends, and potential errors, then summarize findings for business leaders.

- Support fixed asset accounting activities, including tracking, recording, and maintaining accurate asset-related records.

- Use financial tools and platforms such as Bill Trust, bank portals, tax systems, Esker, and Black Line to complete daily accounting tasks and approvals.

- Contribute to ad hoc accounting assignments and special projects that support the broader finance function.

- Partner with internal stakeholders to ensure timely completion of reporting deliverables and compliance-related documentation. Requirements - Experience in staff accounting with hands-on responsibility for journal entries, general ledger activity, and month-end close support.

- Knowledge of account reconciliations and bank reconciliations, with the ability to research and correct outstanding items.

- Background in corporate tax support and familiarity with preparing information for audits or related reviews.

- Strong Microsoft Excel skills, including the ability to work efficiently with large data sets and perform detailed analysis.

- Understanding of fixed asset accounting principles and related recordkeeping requirements.

- Ability to identify financial trends, investigate inconsistencies, and communicate findings clearly to leadership.

- Familiarity with accounting and payment platforms such as Black Line, Bill Trust, Esker, banking portals, or similar systems.

- Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple deadlines in a contract environment.
