Job Summary
Nationwide is seeking a Specialist, Accounting in Finance Controllership on a Success Flex basis. The position requires a location within 35 miles of 1 Nationwide Blvd, Columbus, Ohio, and a work schedule of 2 days in office with 3 days remote. This role does not qualify for employer‑sponsored work authorization.
Key Responsibilities- Lead the establishment and implementation of new or revised accounting policies and procedures.
- Prepare and analyze sophisticated financial and regulatory statements for assigned company/business areas.
- Develop and submit sophisticated accounting and financial transactions to ensure accurate reporting.
- Ensure completeness and accuracy of all reports, forms and data for internal and external stakeholders.
- Recommend management actions when financial analysis reveals unfavorable trends, situations or deviations.
- Stay informed of changes to GAAP and/or STAT regulatory requirements that impact statement and report submission.
- Recommend enhancements to processes to improve job performance and workflow.
- Lead the design and development of new and enhanced systems and processes within the assigned area.
- Prepare and analyze complex pro forma financial data required for compliance with new requirements.
- Assist management in applying financial data and analysis to solve administrative and operating problems.
- Prepare state and supplemental reporting requirements.
- Provide complex financial information to internal and external auditors, IRS, state examiners, and other regulatory agencies.
- Prepare special reports and presentations for stakeholders.
- Serve in a group leader capacity to other accountants on selected projects.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reports to Accounting Manager or Director.
Typical Skills and ExperienceEducation: Undergraduate studies in accounting, finance or business administration; accounting major and degree preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: Progress toward CPA preferred.
Experience: Four to six years of related accounting experience; insurance experience preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities and
Skills:
GAAP and/or STAT knowledge and/or functional business area regulatory requirements; complex financial statement preparation including consolidation; taxation principles and their impact on financial statements; accounting and business computer systems; company organizational structure and products/services; verbal and written communication skills for internal/external contacts; ability to analyze, discover and solve accounting problems; project management skills; ability to interpret changes in financial reporting and legal requirements;
advanced computing skills; ability to apply accounting principles to complex and nonrecurring problems. Leadership skills, competencies and experiences may also be considered.
Overtime Eligibility: Exempt (Not eligible)
Working Conditions: Normal office environment. May require extended hours in periods of high volume.
