Position Summary
The Tax Director leads Nationwide’s sales, use tax, and personal property tax functions, overseeing compliance, planning, legislative monitoring, and audit management. The role provides strategic and technical leadership to ensure tax obligations are met accurately and timelily, tax positions are well supported, and tax risks and planning opportunities are identified and addressed proactively.
Location:
Columbus, Ohio. Remote candidates may be considered but must be willing to work in the office two days per week.
- Lead all sales and use tax and personal property tax compliance activities, including return preparation, filings, payments, and notices.
- Oversee the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of tax data, calculations, accruals, reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
- Establish and maintain processes and controls to support compliance with state and local tax requirements.
- Review taxability determinations for purchases, leases, software, services, fixed assets, and other transactions.
- Manage exemption certificate administration and other documentation required to support tax positions.
- Monitor compliance calendars, notices, registrations, and jurisdictional requirements to ensure all obligations are met.
- Identify and lead tax planning opportunities related to sales and use tax and personal property tax.
- Evaluate transaction flows, systems, sourcing, and operational changes to improve tax efficiency and reduce risk.
- Prepare and review federal and state/local tax returns for all assigned enterprise companies.
- Coordinate federal and state/local tax audits and provide research for negotiated settlements.
- Lead legislative workload and manage the compliance and planning agenda.
- Develop and manage the tax team, including hiring, training, and performance evaluation.
- Provide guidance to accounting departments on accurate tax reporting policies.
- Assist senior management in evaluating business transactions for tax impact.
- Reports directly to the Tax Executive.
- Leads a team of Tax professionals.
- Undergraduate degree in tax, law, accounting, or related field; progress toward a master’s degree in taxation preferred.
- Minimum eight years’ experience in insurance tax, public accounting, or law firm; at least six years of tax management experience.
- CPA or J.D. preferred; valid license or certification required.
- Proven knowledge of federal, state, and local tax law; familiarity with statutory and GAAP accounting.
- Experience with tax systems, modeling, and research techniques.
- Strong communication skills, able to translate technical tax concepts to business executives.
