Actuarial Specialist - Personal Lines Pricing

Role OverviewPerform complex mathematical and quantitative analyses for property and casualty (P&C) products, participate in a rotation program, and develop actuarial methodologies.
General Actuarial Support- Develop business relationships across multi‑channel finance.
- Assist with transactional pricing and loss rating.
- Engage in data analysis.
- Proficiency in actuarial methodologies and data analysis.
- Strong communication skills for presenting findings to technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Experience with Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
- Generate actuarial pricing analysis alongside Pricing leadership in support of state and line‑level business decisions. Involved in analysis regarding different rate and non‑rate strategies to manage profitability.
- Continually develop deeper knowledge of actuarial methodologies, allowing the ability to source and manipulate more complex data within standard requirements.
- Conduct analyses that adhere to actuarial standards by selecting appropriate data sources and making assumptions to develop recommendations; note and suggest potential resolution to any unreasonable results and report to leader.
- Accurately document assumptions, methods, sources, and considerations in an organized fashion.
- Prepare and present actuarial findings and documents suitable for technical and non‑technical audiences.
- Adhere to assigned work schedule to ensure timely completion of individual tasks and group projects; notify leadership of any possible missed deadlines and impacts.
- Perform peer reviews to increase collaboration, ensure quality work, and drive innovation.
- Continue to develop business relationships across PC multi‑channel finance and begin developing relationships in other areas of finance to gain business acumen.
- Assist with onboarding and training new associates on standard work processes.
- Use data mining techniques to identify new relationships in data; gain understanding and ability to build models in different software packages and explore the use of new software packages; have basic knowledge of predictive modeling.
- May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
- Experience with Python or R.
- Typically 1–3 years of proven experience in P&C insurance with a focus on pricing.
- This position is open to students taking actuarial exams; the role provides support for exams including study time, materials, and exam fees.
- This role will be staffed at the F pay band and will sit in Columbus (OH) or Des Moines (IA). The role will have a hybrid work arrangement of at least two days per week in‑office and up to three days remotely.
- This role can be staffed in other locations for existing Nationwide associates already working in other locations.
Our Property and Casualty (P&C) Actuarial team members have opportunities to use state‑of‑the‑art tools, are encouraged to innovate, and learn to master actuarial methodologies. As an Actuarial Specialist, you’ll gain a more thorough knowledge of our actuarial functions for our P&C products and will perform increasingly complex mathematical and quantitative actuarial analyses that are crucial to the success of Nationwide and the protection we provide to our customers.
This position offers the opportunity to be a part of the P&C Actuarial Rotation Program, which may involve two or three rotations of two years each.
Reports to an Actuarial, Analytics, or Risk Management leader.
Typical Skills and ExperiencesEducation:
Undergraduate degree in actuarial science, mathematics, statistics, data science, or similar background requiring modeling, programming or quantitative analysis.
License/Certification/Designation:
Generally, passes four or more actuarial exams and is actively enrolled in the Actuarial Student Program.
Experience:
Generally, three or more years of actuarial experience.
