Position: Senior Distressed Debt & High‑Yield Credit Analyst

Distressed Debt Analyst

As a team member in Finance at Nationwide, the Distressed Debt Analyst is an important contributor on the Leveraged Finance team reporting to a Senior Investment Professional. The analyst works alongside analysts, traders, and portfolio managers across Nationwide’s investment platform, focusing on public and private debt investments in various stages of financial stress. This role offers an opportunity for an experienced investment professional to drive workout and restructuring capabilities within the investment process.

The analyst partners with team members in framing downside sensitivity analyses on performing investments and drives the process on distressed and other special situations.

Location: Columbus, OH – One Nationwide Plaza, Columbus, OH 43215 (must reside within 35 miles).
Schedule: 3 days in office, 2 days remote.
Work authorization: The role does not qualify for employer‑sponsored work authorization;
Nationwide does not participate in the STEM OPT extension program.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide investment recommendations and insights on special situations across sectors for both existing holdings and new opportunities as appropriate.
  • Identify initial indications of fundamental deterioration, restructuring, reorganization, bankruptcy, and workout situations.
  • Produce base case and downside fundamental forecasts, valuation analyses, and recovery expectations.
  • Possess strong legal acumen and knowledge of relevant legal documents (bond indentures, credit agreements, etc.).
  • Demonstrate proficient knowledge of corporate and debt structuring, including bank loans.
  • Engage with market participants, street analysts, and the restructuring advisor/attorney community.
  • Lead investment team engagement with the in‑house legal team.
  • Provide regular updates to portfolio managers, analysts, and traders on all pertinent news items.
Senior Investment Analyst – High Yield Credit Research

The Senior Investment Analyst on our High Yield Credit Research team identifies, analyzes, and recommends investments within the high‑yield bond market, driving and monitoring investment strategies in assigned sectors.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform research and analysis to support the team’s investment decision‑making process.
  • Work independently on day‑to‑day tasks, identifying risk and return drivers, developing and modeling forward‑looking scenarios, and analyzing relative value.
  • Provide investment recommendations for positioning within assigned sectors.
  • Communicate analysis and investment theses through written reports, presentations, conversations, and market meetings.
  • Evaluate changes in economic, regulatory, legislative, and competitive business environments that impact investment fundamentals, valuations, and positioning.
  • Build relationships with internal and external partners to facilitate analysis of investment opportunities.
  • Collaborate with other Nationwide Investment groups to advance client interests.
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree required; MBA or CFA preferred.
  • Experience: 4 to 7 years of related investment experience.

    Experienced understanding of credit research, high‑yield and leveraged loan credit research, proficiency in Excel, prior Bloomberg experience, strong verbal and written communication skills, self‑motivated, collaborative, critical and creative thinker, organized, detail‑oriented, and outstanding analytical/problem‑solving abilities.
  • Ability to work independently with oversight as required.
