The Ohio State University's Innovation Investment Management team sits within the Innovation and Commercialization function, where university research, technology commercialization, startup formation, venture capital, and portfolio stewardship intersect. As Ohio State technologies move toward licensing, startup creation, external funding, and market growth, the team manages the investment, fund reporting and portfolio activity connected to university innovation.
The Senior Analyst, Innovation Investment Management, is a key member of the team supporting investment analysis, portfolio reporting, fund and external capital analysis, diligence materials, venture market intelligence, and portfolio research. This role is designed for an analytically strong candidate interested in working at the intersection of venture capital, startup finance, university innovation, fund investing, portfolio management, and technology commercialization.
The Senior Analyst will support evaluation of startup, follow-on investment, fund, and external capital opportunities; prepare financial, market, ownership, fund, and portfolio analyses; monitor portfolio activity and fund performance; develop dashboards and committee materials; and translate data, documents, and market activity into decision-support materials for senior team members and leadership.
This role provides broad exposure to university-affiliated startups, early-stage investment activity, fund opportunities, external capital relationships, and innovation portfolio management, with a focus on analysis, reporting synthesis, diligence support, and venture market intelligence.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct due diligence and investment analysis for direct and follow-on investment opportunities involving university-affiliated startups and existing portfolio companies, as well as fund and external capital platform opportunities.
- Review fund reports, manager updates, capital activity, valuation changes, distributions, unfunded exposure, portfolio developments, and prospective fund materials; prepare summaries, dashboards, diligence support, and briefing materials for senior team members, committees, and leadership.
- Build financial analyses, market research, ownership analyses, fund summaries, exposure analyses, dashboards, and written materials that support investment decisions, participation rights evaluations, fund diligence, external capital discussions, and emerging capital deployment activity.
- Monitor portfolio performance, financing activity, milestone achievement, external capital raised, valuation changes, capital needs, and other indicators that inform portfolio reporting, impact assessment, and leadership decision-making.
- Prepare portfolio reports, impact assessments, dashboards, briefing materials and presentations for leadership, investment and advisory committee meetings.
- Translate venture capital, fund investing, startup financing, university innovation, and commercialization trends into insights that support portfolio strategy and the development of Ohio State's innovation investment platform.
- Map funds, investors, sectors, markets, and external capital models, and university-affiliated investment approaches to identify funding trends, market dynamics, portfolio capital needs, and areas of alignment with Ohio State-affiliated startups, portfolio priorities, and fund investment strategy.
- Maintain investment analysis files, portfolio research, diligence materials, fund reporting inputs, and supporting documentation used for internal decision-making, in coordination with other IIM team members.
- Coordinate with founders, faculty, commercialization teams, portfolio companies, fund managers, and internal stakeholders to gather information, support diligence and reporting needs, and maintain visibility into investment and portfolio activity.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in business, finance, economics, public administration, or related field.
- 4 years of relevant experience required in investment analysis, economic development, venture capital, or related areas.
