Eligibility
This posting is for lateral applicants who have a minimum of two years of continuous experience without a break in service. Applicants must currently be employed as police officers. OPOTA (or equivalent) Certified officers who are not currently employed or candidates who need to complete an OPOTA academy must fill out the entry‑level application and submit a copy of their OPOTA or state law‑enforcement certificate.
Aboutthe Division
The Grandview Heights Division of Police serves the City of Grandview Heights and the Village of Marble Cliff, with approximately 8,900 residents. The Department is located west of downtown Columbus and offers a range of job opportunities in Police Administration, Patrol, Investigations, Communications, Canine Handler, Bicycle Patrol, and Task Force Officer(s). Authorized staff includes twenty‑four sworn officers and nine civilian members.
The Division has transitioned to twelve‑hour shifts, guaranteeing members every other weekend off.
We seek dedicated candidates who can work in a team environment, build community partnerships, and proactively preserve peace, protect life and property, and safeguard the constitutional rights of all residents. Essential Functions- Operate a police vehicle in an assigned area of the city to maintain law and order
- Respond to emergency calls and citizen complaints
- Interview witnesses, victims, or suspects
- Appear in court and deliver subpoenas
- Investigate criminal and traffic offenses
- Direct traffic and manage crowd control
- Transport prisoners as directed
- Receive and dispatch radio messages
- Attend formal training classes and staff conferences
- Prepare daily and special reports as required
- Work irregular, on‑call, and/or emergency hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays
- Maintain necessary licenses and certifications
- Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance
- Meet all job safety requirements and applicable OSHA safety standards
- Ability to give chase by vehicle or on foot
- Ability to restrain or subdue individuals
- Ability to walk, stand, sit, or run for prolonged periods
- Occasional stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, twist, climb, and balance
- Regularly push, pull, lift, and/or carry light to moderate weights, and occasionally move moderate to heavy weights
- Ability to work in a range of weather conditions and in toxic or infectious environments
- Ability to operate a vehicle and specialized police tools, including firearms
- Ability to respond to high‑stress situations and threats to personal safety
- May be exposed to blood borne pathogens and other hazardous materials
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of prescribed police officer certification training and one year of probation
- Participation in and selection through competitive examination process per Civil Service Commission procedures
- Valid Ohio motor‑vehicle operator’s license at appointment
- Knowledge of police equipment operation, including vehicles and computers
- Weapons training and required certifications
- Law‑enforcement theory, principles, and practices applicable to municipal services
- Operations, services, and activities of a municipal law‑enforcement program
- Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations, including search‑and‑seizure and arrest procedures
- Methodologies for crime prevention, investigation, patrol, traffic control, record management, and custody of persons and property
- Self‑defense techniques and appropriate use of force
- Rules and regulations of the police organization
- Conducting criminal, traffic, and special investigations
- Interviewing witnesses, victims, or suspects
- Using a firearm and modern police equipment
- Applying, enforcing, and interpreting federal, state, and local policy, law, and regulation
- Physical agility
- Perform a wide range of law‑enforcement assignments
