What We Do

Job Description What We Need You To Do

We are looking for a new environmental specialist in our Division of Materials and Waste Management (DMWM) at our Central Office in downtown Columbus, Ohio. As the newest environmental specialist, you will act as a lead worker providing technical support, training, guidance, and direction regarding solid waste planning to staff and regulated community regarding requirements related to solid waste management plans, annual district reports, solid waste management district fees, state solid waste fees, and recycling and waste reduction programs.

You will take the lead for program development projects such as rule activities, research activities, and grant-seeking activities. You will also serve as a division coordinator for federal grant funding programs, providing technical, interpersonal, and strategic skills, financial judgement, and decision-making.

You will facilitate internal group meetings and be responsible for determining meeting logistics and agenda topics – while providing guidance, direction, and assistance with developing training material to support the solid waste management planning. You will track and coordinate solid waste management plan reviews and approvals/disapprovals.

Responsibilities
  • Act as lead worker by providing technical support, training, and guidance.
  • Inform regulated community on requirements related to solid waste management plans, reports, fees, etc.
  • Coordinate federal grant funding programs.
  • Facilitate internal group meetings.
  • Provide guidance, direction, and assistance with development of training material, supporting the solid waste management planning.
  • Track and coordinate solid waste management plan reviews and approvals/disapprovals.
Qualifications
  • 7 years relevant programmatic experience.
  • OR combination of education in an environmentally focused discipline or other job-related discipline and specific programmatic experience equaling 7 years.
  • OR completion of undergraduate core coursework in an environmentally-related discipline and 3 years relevant programmatic experience.
  • OR 2 years relevant programmatic experience as Environmental Supervisor, 85865.
  • OR equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications for Employment noted above.
  • Note:

    For all positions involving field work, applicants must provide own transportation. New employees in OEPA's solid waste program, excluding those in the solid waste planning unit, must obtain a sanitarian-in-training certificate during their probationary period.
