Office of Family Assistance

The Office of Family Assistance (OFA) provides policy, operational, technical assistance and training support for safety net programs that assist low-income Ohioans. This includes:
Cash assistance programs funded by the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Block Grant, including Ohio Works First (OWF) and the Prevention Retention and Contingency (PRC) programs;
Food assistance programs including, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) Program, the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) and The Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP);

What You Will Do
  • Review fraud referrals and reports of skimming and/or scamming
  • Conduct investigations of reported SNAP and/or TANF fraud
  • Interview recipients, providers, and/or other third parties related to a fraud referral
  • Calculate claims and enter into appropriate tracking or eligibility system
  • Determine if claims meet the definition of intentional fraud
  • Create and maintain claims related documentation
  • Monitor claims for recoupment
  • Monitor key fraud indicator, high balance, and duplicate address reports and conduct additional investigation or refer to county as needed
  • Monitor and analyze skimming and scamming data
  • Retrieve skimming devices
  • Facilitate fraud related discussions across multiple teams
  • Complete special fraud related activities as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
Recommended Skills
  • Experience in reviewing SNAP and/or TANF fraud cases
  • Customer service skills (important in interviewing customers)
  • Ability to access and read case data in the Ohio Benefits and Electronic Document Management System (EDMS)
  • Must be detail oriented and well organized
  • Must possess efficient time management and multi-tasking skills
  • Must be able to work independently as well as collaborate across multiple teams

Schedule: Part-time.

Hours: Standard workdays are Monday through Friday. Hours are between 7:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m.

This is an intermittent, temporary position. The final candidate selected for this position will not be permitted to exceed 1,000 hours worked per fiscal year (July 1st - June 30th). This position is Unclassified per ORC 124.11(A) (29).

Location: Rhodes State Officer Tower - 30

E. Broad Street, FL 31, Columbus, OH 43215.

Travel: Occasional travel within the state of Ohio.

Option 1
  • Completion of associate core program in law enforcement, criminal justice or in academic field commensurate with program area to be assigned per approved Position Description on file;
Option 2
  • Or 30 mos. trg. or 30 mos. exp. as Investigator Assistant, 26210 with experience corresponding to type of complaints & alleged violations appearing in job posting/approved position description;
  • Valid driver's license.
Option 3
  • Or 30 mos. trg. or 30 mos. investigative exp. with experience corresponding to type of complaints & alleged violations appearing in job posting/approved position description;
  • Valid driver's license.
Option 4
  • The equivalent of Minimum Class Qualifications For Employment noted above.
Pay Information

This position is in the State of Ohio’s OCSEA/AFSCME Pay Schedule, Pay Range 31. Unless required by legislation or union contract, salary will be the minimum salary of that pay range (step 1, currently $28.76 per hour).
