Job Description
Summary:
Manages programs and directs resources and services to meet developmental, psychosocial, educational, and recreational needs of children and families receiving care ocates for, develops, facilitates, and evaluates programs and services that will sustain and enrich a patient- and family-centered environment for healthcare that is supportive of development, coping, and comfort. Builds collaborative relationships with key partners including but not limited to the Foundation, Public Relations and Marketing, Patient Care Services, Education, Finance, and Human Resources.
Incorporates evidence-based practices and demonstrates competencies.
Job Description
Essential Functions:
- Advocates for and promotes patient- and family-centered care throughout NCH.
- Advocates for and represents the spirit and mission of volunteerism to volunteers, hospital staff, and the community.
- Supervises the provision of developmental, educational, and recreational services including those provided by department staff, volunteers, and public-school teachers.
- Develops and implements annual goals for the department.
- Develops annual department budgets and ensures their implementation throughout the year.
- Hires and supervises department staff. Cultivates leadership skills amongst department staff.
- Works closely with families and patients to identify developmental, educational, recreational, and service needs; recognizes and is sensitive to the diversity of families and their needs, and represents family issues to appropriate parties serving as a resource in designing and modifying programs and environments to support children and families throughout NCH.
- Participates in planning and implementation of selected celebrations and events, both internal and external, related to areas of responsibility (such as holiday celebrations and volunteer recognition).
- Supports the training of students in child development, early childhood education, child life, and therapeutic arts, and works with department staff to provide appropriate fieldwork experiences.
- Works closely with Foundation, Marketing, and Public Relations staff to foster positive relationships with community groups, auxiliaries, and visitors who wish to interact with NCH patients or make special contributions; represents the service needs of children and families to internal and external forums.
- Ensures hospital volunteers meet compliance for training, health, and background check requirements as appropriate for their assigned role.
- Participates in professional organizations and continuing education initiatives to advance knowledge and skills for self and others.
Education Requirement
Master’s Degree in human services, education, or related field, required.

Skills
- Knowledge of child development and responsiveness to family concerns, which include those special needs of children and families dealing with routine, acute, and chronic health care.
- Ability to recruit, supervise, and motivate both professional and non-professional staff as well as a large, diverse cadre of volunteers
- Outstanding interpersonal skills and public speaking ability
- Ability to provide organization-wide leadership in areas of responsibility
