Position: Patient Financial Counselor 1

Scope of Position

The Revenue Cycle for The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center is responsible for providing excellent customer service while processing patient demographic and insurance information efficiently and accurately. Areas within the Revenue Cycle include pre-registration, registration, pre-certification, financial clearance and counseling, financial assistance, scheduling, billing, claims follow-up, customer service and cash collection. The primary responsibility of staff with the Revenue Cycle is to ensure the collection of net revenue for services rendered.

Position Summary

The Financial Counselor role supports patients with outpatient, inpatient and ambulatory surgery visits by fully explaining multifaceted commercial and government insurance policies and benefits, analyzing complex financial situations and determining appropriate program eligibility for both governmental and non‑governmental options, working diligently with patients to complete the application process and collecting verifications for various financial assistance programs such as Charity, HCAP and Medicaid.

Additional responsibilities include creating accurate estimates, collecting deposits and setting up payment plans. Excellent communication skills are required as this position collaborates with clinical teams, including senior hospital administration, to facilitate discharge planning or ongoing treatment programs when financial needs are identified.

Minimum Qualifications For Hire

Required: High School Diploma or GED. PC knowledge and interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills. Minimum six months of experience in customer service or a healthcare environment.

Preferred: Experience with Windows, Excel, and intranet/internet navigation tools as well as system content. Medical terminology, coding, and third‑party reimbursement experience. Ability to work in multiple systems for assigned tasks, management, and reporting. Strong problem‑solving and presentation skills. High level of customer service skills. Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple tasks in a busy environment.

2 weekend positions available:

  • Tuesday - Saturday
  • Sunday - Thursday
