About Vision To Learn
Vision To Learn is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides vision screenings, eye exams, and glasses to K–12 students in underserved U.S. communities at no cost to them or their families. Using mobile vision clinics—optometric exam rooms on wheels—our team brings essential eye care directly to schools and community centers so every child can see clearly and learn confidently. Since 2012, we have offered more than 3.6 million vision screenings, 730,000 eye exams, and 600,000 pairs of glasses to children in need across the nation.
Position OverviewThe Optician works full‑time in Columbus, Ohio, mainly during school hours, with occasional Saturday shifts and a flexible remote setting. Responsibilities focus on operating mobile clinics, administering eye exams, fitting glasses, and ensuring safe vehicle and clinic operations.
Key Responsibilities- Patient Responsibilities
- Oversee assigned mobile eye clinic operation.
- Conduct eye exam pre‑tests and maintain professional standards.
- Take measurements, fit and adjust frames based on prescribed optics.
- Assist patients with frame selections for optimal fit and satisfaction.
- Complete daily reports, meet deadlines, and follow up with caregivers for feedback.
- Conduct vision screenings using a Welch Allyn Spot Check Vision Screener.
- Dispense glasses to large groups of student patients if licensed.
- Adhere to Vision To Learn health and safety protocols.
- Clinic Responsibilities
- Maintain optimal driver safety standards during driving, parking, and vehicle usage.
- Set up the clinic, monitor and replenish inventory, and ensure efficient workflow each day.
- Load, secure, inspect, and fuel the vehicle as necessary.
- Keep vehicle and internal work areas clean and organized at all times.

- Exceptional interpersonal skills when interacting with children, site contacts, families, and colleagues.
- Motivated to work in a fast‑paced, dynamic environment with technical aptitude.
- Desire to be cross‑trained to expand skillset.
- Self‑starter, confident to implement protocols with limited supervision.
- Excellent organizational and prioritization skills.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Able to lift up to 20 lbs. and maintain mobility for an 8‑hour shift.
- Qualifications
- Optician diploma; optician certification in Ohio (COA, COT, NCLE, ABO) strongly encouraged; experience as optician/optical technician required.
- Valid driver’s license with a good record and familiarity with Greater Columbus area and GPS navigation; driving transcript required.
- Proven experience working with children and diverse populations.
- Successful completion of company and CMS background checks and drug screening.
- Experience with Microsoft Office (Outlook, Excel, Word); ability to learn EHR reporting and project management systems is a plus.
- Spanish skills are a plus.
