Job Summary

The IV Pharmacy Technician works under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist. Duties are pursuant to Board of Pharmacy defined technician tasks and may include accurately filling prescriptions, preparing sterile compounding medications, entering computer data, following standard procedures, and regulatory requirements.

Schedule

4:00 pm – 12:30 am with rotating weekends. Overtime, holidays, and weekends may be required and/or expected.

Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain sterile compounding room and QA per USP 797 guidelines.
  • Work under direct supervision of a Registered Pharmacist to fill prescriptions and prepare sterile compounding according to Polaris standards and State Board of Pharmacy regulations.
  • Use knowledge of long‑term and post‑acute care.
  • Stage, prep, and fill orders for residents at long‑term care facilities and high‑risk pregnant women.
  • Compound sterile orders in a Class 100 clean room as directed by pharmacists, IV supervisor, or Director of Pharmacy.
  • Perform data entry.
  • Assist pharmacist with calling care facilities.
  • Maintain, clean, and account for pumps.
  • File, answer phones, and stock areas in the IV department as directed by supervisor.
  • Work with lead IV technician to maintain a clean/safe work environment and check equipment for calibration, safety, and cleanliness.
  • Replenish and maintain emergency drug kits (EDK) for long‑term and post‑acute care facilities.
  • Follow all applicable government regulations, including HIPAA.
  • Communicate with pharmacist, supervisor, or lead technician about any concerns regarding USP 797 and operations.
  • Comply with departmental policies regarding safety, attendance, and dress code.
  • Other duties as assigned; duties may vary depending on business needs.
Qualifications & Competencies

  • Data entry skills, analytical, ability to multi‑task.
  • Basic computer knowledge.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Basic math and analytical skills.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English.
  • Physical ability to perform light lifting.
  • Ability to work various shifts and days.
Education & Experience
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Pharmacy technician licenses/certifications required by state regulations.
  • Minimum of one (1) year working as an IV pharmacy technician required (long‑term care pharmacy preferred).
  • Knowledge of brand‑name and generic medications.
  • Experience working with medications, IV's, and filling prescriptions required.
  • Order entry and insurance billing experience required.
Physical Demands
  • May sit or stand seven (7) to ten (10) hours per day.
  • Occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel, bend, or walk.
  • May be necessary to work extended hours as needed.
  • May lift and/or move up to 30 pounds.
  • The work environment includes typical characteristics encountered for essential functions of this role.
