Overview
The Lab Processing Technician provides services in the Surgical Pathology Gross Room at The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, a laboratory within the Division of Surgical Pathology, Department of Pathology. The position duties include: retrieving and receiving specimens from surgical suites and clinic locations; sectioning specimens as needed and placing them in proper fixative; triaging specimens for ancillary testing; confirming patient identity and labeling requirements;
accessioning specimens using Epic Beaker software ensuring proper billing codes; preparing specimens or other materials for transport; tracking and transporting specimens within the facility; facilitating problem resolution for unacceptable specimens; performing microtomy on frozen section specimens; staining and cover slipping frozen section slides; answering laboratory phones and performing customer service duties; assisting with inventory and stocking supplies; performing daily and weekly cleaning and decontamination tasks;
and ensuring quality control measures are performed. The position reports to the Gross Room Managers. Coverage is Monday to Friday, 8-hour shifts between 7:00 am and 7:00 pm, with hours possibly adjusting based on lab needs. The role is primarily based in the James Cancer Hospital, with potential rotation to Doan Hall, The James Outpatient Care Center, and OSU East Hospital as needed.
- Receive and accession specimens from surgical suites and clinics.
- Section and fixate specimens as required; triage for ancillary testing.
- Confirm patient identity and labeling requirements; ensure correct billing codes in Epic Beaker.
- Prepare specimens for transport and manage internal tracking.
- Transport specimens within the facility and facilitate issue resolution for unacceptable specimens.
- Perform microtomy on frozen section specimens; stain and coverslip frozen section slides.
- Answer laboratory phones and perform customer service duties.
- Assist with inventory, stocking supplies, and routine cleaning/decontamination.
- Ensure adherence to quality control measures.
- High School diploma or GED. Bachelor's degree preferred.
- 1 year of relevant experience required.
