About Mercy Urgent Care

Mercy Urgent Care is a nonprofit urgent care network serving Western North Carolina, carrying forward a legacy of compassionate care established by the Sisters of Mercy in 1900. We provide excellent, accessible care to anyone who seeks our services, regardless of background or ability to pay.

Position Overview

This is a cross-trained role at our Colombus, NC location combining front desk registration, clinical Medical Assistant duties, and limited-scope radiology. The position is designed for team members who are comfortable rotating between front desk and clinical assignments and stepping into either role at any time based on clinic needs.

This role is a strong fit for someone who enjoys variety, teamwork, and a fast-paced urgent care setting. It is not the right fit for someone seeking a narrowly defined set of duties.

Key Responsibilities:

Front Desk and Patient Access

  • Welcome patients and visitors in person and by phone with a professional, friendly approach
  • Register patients accurately, including demographic, insurance, and financial information
  • Verify insurance eligibility, explain basic payment responsibilities, identify compassionate care eligibility, and collect payments
  • Answer phones, route messages, support patient questions, and update patient information in the electronic medical record while maintaining HIPAA standards

Clinical Care

  • Escort patients to treatment rooms and create a calm, respectful patient experience
  • Obtain vital signs, perform basic assessments, and document health history, medications, and allergies
  • Assist providers with patient care tasks and procedures within scope, including physicals and splinting
  • Support waived lab testing, drug screens, blood alcohol testing, spirometry, specimen handling, telehealth triage, and patient discharge as needed

Limited Radiology

  • Complete employer-provided training to perform limited-scope diagnostic X-rays
  • Position patients and perform routine exams following established protocols and radiation safety practices
  • Verify imaging orders, label and transmit images correctly, and document exams in the medical record
  • Perform basic quality checks and report equipment issues promptly

Clinic Operations and Safety

  • Help maintain clean, organized front desk, waiting, and treatment areas
  • Participate in opening and closing procedures, including alarm-related responsibilities
  • Assist with inventory, room setup, equipment logs, and coordination of maintenance and repairs
  • Follow infection control, OSHA, HIPAA, and radiation safety protocols
  • Use professionalism and de-escalation skills in high-stress situations

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Certified Medical Assistant required, or Radiologic Technologist/Radiology Assistant
  • 1–3 years of direct patient care experience preferred; experience in a medical office, patient registration, or healthcare customer service is a plus
  • Ability and willingness to complete cross-training in limited-scope radiology; prior X-ray experience is a plus
  • Strong computer and communication skills, including comfort using an electronic medical record
  • Working knowledge of insurance verification, registration, and payment collection preferred
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the role, including frequent standing and walking and light lifting up to 20lbs, with reasonable accommodations as needed

What We’re Looking For:

  • Compassion, empathy, integrity, and strong customer service skills
  • A team-first mindset and willingness to jump in wherever the clinic needs support.
  • The ability to build trust quickly with patients and coworkers
  • Eagerness to learn new skills and be cross trained across front desk, clinical, and imaging functions
  • Sound judgment, adaptability, and professionalism in a fast-paced environment
  • Cultural sensitivity and responsiveness to a diverse community

Benefits Highlights:

  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Health Savings Account and Direct Primary Care options
  • Life and accidental insurance, plus short- and long-term disability coverage
