The Hartford’s Group Benefits IT Team is seeking a highly motivated, experienced IT Leader who is responsible for leading engineering teams to successfully drive the transformation of our application landscape. The Software Engineering Manager will have end-to-end accountabilities in IT Operations across the application portfolio. Successful candidates will demonstrate strong leadership skills, excellent partnership with stakeholders and partner teams, solid technical acumen, experience in delivering quality technical solutions as well as setting and executing on a strategic technical vision to ensure the systems are stable, performant, and secure.
Responsibilities- Manage a team of software engineers
- Function as the go-to technical leader for the software applications supported, requiring depth and breadth of knowledge in technologies, applications, integration, interfaces and business domain
- Serve as key liaison between the architecture and technical delivery teams to influence the technical strategy for the organization, keeping in mind its cross functional impacts, integration across the organization, and architecture rationalization
- Collaborate with teams to identify opportunities for integration across tools used in the life cycle, including agile, test automation, platform configuration management, and drive efficiencies
- Provide concise, transparent communications about potential risks, mitigations and business impacts in a timely manner
- Hire, train, and develop talent for growth opportunities; monitor team/individual’s morale and engagement to maintain highly effective and collaborative environments
- Understand technology trade-off risks and rewards for the best customer value delivery
- Challenge teams for continuous improvement ideas and support the team for implementation
- Drive innovation for effectively leveraging technology to solve the customer problem
- Oversee technical deliverables, coaching and mentoring of software engineers and provide technical leadership; enforce development guidelines and best practices. Foster an environment of experimentation and continual improvement through regular Innovation Sprints, technical debt reduction and a forward-thinking architectural runway
- Experience in building and advocating RESTful services, API design best practices, distributed systems, micro services architecture and other architectural patterns
- Proactively address technical issues and risks that could impact project schedule and/or integrity of the application environment
- Work closely with stakeholders to design and document solutions that align with the business needs and are consistent with the architectural vision
- Candidates must be authorized to work in the US without company sponsorship. The company will not support the STEM OPT I-983 Training Plan endorsement for this position.
- 10+ years of experience in application software solution development along with managing software engineering teams
- Strategic planning, process analysis and execution skills for introducing evolving architecture based solutions like cloud-based technologies (AWS), SaaS, and open source frameworks
- Hands-on experience with Java and J2EE technologies, such as Java Web Services, JMS, JSP, XML, JSON, JDBC etc.
- Experience with Web Services (SOAP and Rest)
- Experience with containerization and cloud infrastructure environments like Open Shift AWS
- Experience working in the security domain a plus
- Experience with Oracle and SQL Server relational database technologies. Knowledge of open-source database technologies is beneficial
- Experience with continuous integration and Dev Ops methodologies, preferred tools such as Git Hub, Jenkins, Rally, Sonar Qube etc.
