Provides technical leadership and architectural direction across multiple domains. Shapes strategy, aligns product roadmaps, and ensures architectural integrity across portfolios/domains.

Responsibilities
  • Own solution designs for high complexity domains and mentor junior Technical Software Architects.
  • Produce and maintain architecture artifacts such as HLDs, current and target state diagrams, context diagrams, sequence diagrams.
  • Evaluate design trade‑offs (latency vs throughput, synchronous vs asynchronous calls).
  • Govern critical cross‑cutting concerns: identity, data platform, API platform, observability, and security.
  • Make high‑stakes decisions on build/buy via product evaluations, contributing to reference implementations and proofs of concept.
  • Govern design reviews, capture and track technical risks, assumptions, and decisions.
  • Identify and validate non‑functional requirements (NFR).
  • Establish and enforce enterprise standards (identity, logging, API standards, cloud patterns).
  • Drive projects with evolving technical artifacts to continuously maintain the current‑state ecosystem with enterprise architecture oversight.
  • Curate and share internal knowledge base via the EA tool.
  • Foster a culture of innovation, collaboration, and continuous learning.
  • Develop architect community of practice, mentor, and succession‑plan for the function.
  • Establish and evolve architecture principles, standards, best practices, and enforce through the Architecture Review Board and projects.
  • Ensure alignment between enterprise, solution, and technical architecture layers.
  • Ensure scalability, performance, and resilience of critical systems.
  • Drive technology innovation and adoption and perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related field; or an equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Seven or more years of software engineering experience, including at least five years of guiding large‑scale, multi‑year transformations through architecture design and support.
  • Broad experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and AI/ML enablement.
  • Expertise in API management, microservices, and distributed systems architecture.
  • Experience with Salesforce, FACETS, Service Now, Matillion, Apigee, Snowflake, and data warehousing tools/practices.
  • Experience with data architecture, analytics platforms, and data governance.
  • Strong diagramming skills to communicate complex technical concepts to engineering teams.
  • Receptive to alternative design approaches while maintaining accountability for final design.
  • Experience with best practice software development, integration, and configuration management methodologies.
  • Project management office reporting experience.
  • Coachable, adaptable, and willing to learn and teach modern technologies/processes.
  • Proven track record of leading large‑scale digital transformation initiatives.
  • Strong business acumen and ability to align technology strategy to business outcomes.
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills for inter‑level audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence without authority and drive consensus.
  • Expertise in agile or waterfall methodologies.
Extras
  • Master's degree in a technical discipline such as Information Systems Management, Systems Engineering, or Computer Science.
  • Multiple platform, operating system, RDBMS, and IDE experience.
  • Four or more years of experience in healthcare/insurance industry.
Location

BCBSRI headquarters in downtown Providence. Supported remote or hybrid work:

  • In‑office: onsite 5 days per week.
  • Hybrid: onsite 2-4 days per week.
  • Remote: onsite 0-1 days per week.

Permitted to reside in Arizona, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Texas, Virginia (pending HR approval).
