The System Administrator III, Virtualization is a high-level professional position responsible for virtual server and physical data center environments. This position performs technical engineering activities related to supporting the CSCC virtualization environments which includes planning, designing, implementing, maintaining, and troubleshooting. This role requires technical project leadership duties and is the subject matter expert for their assigned systems.
Essential Job FunctionsSystem Design & Project Management
- Leads the system design and planning of enterprise data center server infrastructure and virtual server environments.
- Architects scalable, high-availability physical server solutions and virtualization platforms to support critical business workloads.
- Develops comprehensive system designs, creates detailed technical specifications, manages large-scale infrastructure projects through implementation, coordinates cross-functional teams, works with external vendors and ensures projects are completed on time.
- Oversees server hardware lifecycle management, virtualization technologies (including compute, storage, and networking virtualization), disaster recovery strategies, and compliance with security and regulatory standards.
- Requires strong technical expertise combined with effective project management skills.
Systems Administration
- Performs tasks associated with pre-production designing, planning, installation, configuration, operation, development, modification, maintenance, and repair of virtualized systems, software, and applications.
- Installs and configures physical servers, including operating systems, software applications, and tools.
- Provides detailed pre-production engineering schematics, flowcharts, and drawings of infrastructure in accordance with the College's needs and recommended best practices.
- Assures minimum service interruptions by analyzing performance, scalability and availability of resources.
- Develops strategies for, and completes performance tuning of, College mission-critical virtualization systems. Analyzes, tests, and troubleshoots assigned systems.
- Maintains confidentiality of any information accessed, received, processed, viewed, etc., within the College's systems, storage, office spaces or other areas utilized within the IT department.
- Required to serve on On-Call/On-Duty rotations for after-hours support, 24/7 availability.
Supporting & Reporting
- Provides Tier III support for listed assigned systems and assists with in-depth troubleshooting for operational teams.
- Schedules system downtime with end users and technical staff members to facilitate hardware and software changes following CSCC change management procedures.
- Documents solutions and standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure services are delivered in an effective and efficient manner for assigned and related areas of responsibility.
- Ensures policies, procedures, rules, and regulations are being met and followed according to college practices. Understands and documents the technical requirements for new services or service enhancements.
- Advises on technological decisions and provides service implementation estimates. Supports the overall operations of assigned environments, ensuring they meet requirements and performance goals.
- Identifies reusable/preconfigured service components or standard products from the market to leverage and assemble the service/solution.
- Works closely with appropriate stakeholders to ensure implementation meets design requirements.

Minimum Education and Experience Required
- High School Diploma or Equivalency.
- At least Six (6) years of progressively responsible technical experience managing virtualization environments.
* An appropriate combination of education, training, coursework and experience may qualify a candidate.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Knowledge of: server and desktop virtualization using VMware vSphere, VMware Horizon, and Microsoft Hyper-V; enterprise SAN systems; networking as it relates to virtualization; server hardware monitoring and troubleshooting;
Business Continuity & Disaster Recovery; server and desktop operating systems and management; system monitoring and logging. - Skilled in: verbal and written communication; managing project work, operating job equipment; planning, scheduling and organizing work; general typing; application of job software programs; application of technical skills in area of specialization.
