Position Summary:

The Staff Attorney drafts decisions, entries, and orders stemming from various legal pleadings, trials, motions, and objections. Research legal issues (case law and statutes) to assist with current cases before the Court. Tracks and reviews pleadings and service of parties. Acts as a liaison for the Judge to court personnel, local bar, attorneys and pro se litigants in the practice and procedure of the court.

Conducts status conferences as requested. Assists the Judge in determining jurisdictional issues between states for purpose of hearings, trials, or motion hearings. This position is considered judges personal staff.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities :
  • Research law, legal proceedings, trials, motions and objections for the Judge and draft decisions for review.
  • Assists with pro-se litigants in the courtroom, often times dealing with difficult and stressful situations in a professional manner.
  • Tracks and reviews pleadings and service of parties.
  • Communicate with the bailiff and secretary to facilitate timely completion of the docket and electronic submission of necessary documentation.
  • Reviews transcripts, exhibits and court records to brief the Judge before trials, motions and objections.
  • Acts as a liaison for the Judge to court personnel, local bar, attorneys and pro se litigants in the practice and procedures of the court.
  • Meets with and explains the Civil Protection Order process and potential outcomes with pro se litigants.
  • Review and summarize electronic submissions of Dissolutions of parties with children, and document areas of concerns for review with Judge.
  • Review Emergency Motions, and when appropriate, speak to parties or attorneys.
  • Supervise legal interns in research and writing in conjunctions with law school education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the judge.
  • Minimum Requirements:
    • Juris Doctor degree and an active law license.
    • Familiar with statutes, civil rules, and courtroom procedures in domestic relations and juvenile areas; strong computer skills; two years’ Domestic Relations or Juvenile Court experience.
    • Must submit a cover letter and writing sample 4-10 pages long.
