This position is within our National Healthcare Division and requires 100% travel. Project locations may vary, and travel incentives are available.
Role SummaryThe General Superintendent will develop and execute project plans, oversee all aspects of complex projects, manage teams, plan construction sequencing, and meet project goals, aligning with JE Dunn’s strategy, vision, and values.
- Autonomy & Decision-Making: Operate independently, adapt plans as needed, make decisions, guide subordinate managers, and consult with supervisors when necessary.
- Career Path: Potential progression to Director of Field Operations.
Superintendent Family - Core
- Lead safety culture, demonstrate commitment to an injury-free environment, investigate incidents, and retrain staff.
- Manage subcontractors and organize overall project workflow.
- Oversee staff, subcontractors, suppliers, and programs like Safety, Quality, and EEO.
- Develop work plans for subcontractors and self-performed work.
- Coordinate project site care, custody, and control.
- Lead meetings, including daily standups and weekly trade meetings.
- Participate in progress and OAC meetings.
- Create and manage project schedules in collaboration with the Project Manager.
- Track and monitor project budgets and costs using management systems.
- Communicate key project information to stakeholders.
- Maintain project documentation, update drawings, logs, diaries, and inspection notebooks.
- Approve and record unit costs, complete daily reports and logs.
- Evaluate progress and adjust plans as needed.
- Manage material and equipment needs.
- Support procurement processes.
- Assist in selecting formwork, tools, and equipment for self-perform operations.
- Manage timecard approvals for accurate reporting.
- Ensure quality compliance through specifications, QA/QC, and external resources.
- Support project closeouts and coordinate with owners, architects, and authorities.
- Understand project pursuit processes and methodologies.
- Participate in pre-planning, staffing, and change management.
- Lead negotiations for project changes.
- Contribute to project review meetings and buyout meetings.
- Understand contractual terms and conditions.
- Identify and recruit top talent.
- Promote diversity and inclusion policies.
Additional Core Responsibilities - General Superintendent
- Manage large, complex projects from start to finish.
- Oversee multiple projects and teams.
- Lead strategic initiatives and develop training content.
- Effectively communicate leadership messages internally and externally.
- Perform tasks accurately, timely, and completely.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Effective presentation skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office, project management, construction technology, scheduling software, and Lean principles.
- Deep knowledge of trades, self-perform work, labor productivity, budgeting, and relationship building.
- Ability to understand project documentation, layout, rigging, and cost management.
- Bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or related field preferred; relevant experience considered as an alternative.
- 12+ years construction experience, including 10+ years in field supervision.
- Experience with Lean principles (preferred).
- Valid driver’s license.
