Overview
An internal audit senior director position focused on business advisory for Nationwide's Property & Casualty, Financial, and Corporate functions. The role leads a consulting and advisory team, partners with senior leaders, and applies advanced analytics and AI to support enterprise risk management.
Key Responsibilities- Develop the Business Advisory strategy and engagement portfolio.
- Ensure advisory engagements deliver clear, practical, action‑oriented recommendations.
- Plan and lead advisory engagements supporting major initiatives, operational transformations, new product launches, and process redesigns across P&C, NF, and Corporate Functions.
- Structure advisory work to be risk‑based, aligned to IA methodology and IIA guidance.
- Provide senior management with insights, foresights, and thought leadership on emerging risks, control implications, and leading practices.
- Assist leaders in anticipating risk impacts and designing controls early in the change lifecycle.
- Partner with ERM, Compliance, Finance, Technology, and other risk partners for a coordinated risk and control view.
- Identify opportunities to leverage existing risk work while avoiding duplication.
- Coordinate with Business Assurance and other IA leaders to ensure advisory work informs assurance coverage, risk assessments, and audit planning.
- Capture and share key themes and learnings from advisory work across IA.
- Use data analytics, process intelligence, benchmarking, and scenario analysis to support advisory recommendations.
- Leverage Digital Auditing Insights to bring advanced analytics and visualization into engagements.
- Lead and develop a highly skilled advisory team, setting expectations for client service, innovation, and continuous learning.
- Contribute to IA-wide methodologies, training, and communities of practice focused on advisory services.
- Lead a team of technology auditors with diverse backgrounds, providing guidance, mentorship, and performance management.
- Foster a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and accountability within Internal Audit.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
The Director reports to VP, Internal Audit, leads a team of three direct reports and nine indirect reports, and oversees centralized management of the PRO rotation program.
Typical Skills and Experiences- Education
:
Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, Economics, Risk Management or related field; advanced degree (MBA or relevant master’s) preferred. - License/Certification/Designation
:
Professional certifications such as CIA, CPA, CISA, CFE, PMP, or similar strongly preferred. - Experience
: 10+ years of progressive experience in internal or external audit, consulting, strategy, operations, finance or risk management, preferably within insurance or financial services; track record of advisory work in complex environments. - Knowledge, Abilities and Skills
:
Expertise in audit methodology, governance frameworks, risk management, and regulatory compliance with IIA Standards; strong understanding of insurance/financial services operations; excellent stakeholder management, influence, and collaboration skills; strong communication, storytelling, and presentation skills; demonstrated AI and analytical capability using data analytics, process intelligence, and scenario analysis; proven leadership capabilities.

Working Conditions:
Normal office environment, some travel may be required. Location requirement: within 35 miles of Nationwide Plaza.
Work schedule:
Minimum 2 days in office, 3 days remote. Employment is on a Success Flex basis and does not qualify for employer-sponsored work authorization.
