Burn Table Operator

Purpose/Summary

A Burn Table Operator performs duties necessary to cut material according to customer specifications using plasma burn table equipment. The operator prepares orders, sets up equipment, communicates with proceeding shifts, and monitors burn table equipment to ensure accurate cuts.

• Loads equipment with product using the overhead crane and/or forklift to prepare the equipment for an accurate cut.
• Removes all materials from the burn table after cutting and handles it according to router instructions.
• Prepares equipment to cut material by downloading or programming the computer according to customer specifications.
• Packages material for shipping when needed.
• Measures material before/after cutting to ensure compliance with customer specifications.
• Completes inspection reports after inspecting and measuring the material.
• Performs preventive maintenance such as wiping down torches and equipment.
• Completes assigned duties in accordance with safety policies and practices with regards to individual safety, the safety of other employees, and the safe use of equipment in the workplace.
• Wears approved personal protective equipment such as safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, etc.
• Performs other duties as assigned by a supervisor, lead person or management.

Working conditions may include loud noise, vibratory tools, repetitive motions, airborne particles such as metal dust and chips, and exposure to chemicals, fumes and bright light. Physical requirements include continual standing, walking, lifting, twisting with periodic bending, climbing, stooping, crawling, and crouching.

• Minimum of one (1) year previous burn table work experience (preferred).
• Ability to read and understand measuring tools and equipment such as a tape measure, calipers and micrometer.
• Ability to safely operate overhead cranes and forklifts.
• Ability to perform math including addition, subtraction, multiplication and division of fractions as well as convert fractions to decimals or vice versa.
• Ability to recognize and interpret colors according to the company’s classification system.
• Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds, as well as lift and move heavier objects with the assistance of cranes, forklifts, or another employee.
• Knowledge of general shop procedures and rules including safety precautions.
• Ability and willingness to cooperate with co-workers and work as part of a production team.

Burn table operators work in an inside environment that is noisy. They must be able to lift, kneel, stand, bend, grasp, reach and twist while standing on a regular basis. Risk factors include repetitive motions, awkward postures, reaching above the shoulder and moving heavy objects. Hazards target the head and eyes, but also include hand, foot, body, fall and noise hazards.

Potential hazards include improper bending/twisting, falling off the table, tripping over the product/material, getting too close to the torches or looking at the torches without proper glasses, and mishandling malfunctioning equipment.

Preventive measures emphasize the proper use of PPE (safety glasses, shoes, hearing protection, etc.) and the correct lifting techniques. Maintaining focus and awareness of surroundings is critical.
